Prior to our last teaching session we handed out questionnaires to the students, all of whom were college age. The statistics below are the shocking truth of how little first aid is understood and how little people are willing to help in an emergency through fear of litigation or not knowing what to do. These are our findings from the 87 students who completed the questionnaire.
Q1- Has the student completed a First Aid course (unregulated)
YES- 36%. NO- 64%
Q2- Following your previous first aid course how confident would you be in performing CPR?
YES 54%. NO- 46%
Q3- Do you know the correct ration of chest compressions to rescue breaths for an adult?
YES- 31% NO- 69%
Q4- Can you correctly identify each step of the pneumonic DR ABC?
YES- 4%. NO- 96%
Q5- Would you feel more confident to use these skills had you been taught a frontline Ambulance crew?
YES- 97% NO- 3%
