This week is World Glaucoma Week and here at Eyetech Frome, we are raising awareness of the condition.
Glaucoma is a chronic, progressive, and degenerative disorder of the optic nerve that causes visual field damage. If untreated, glaucoma can eventually progress to blindness.
It is a genetic condition, so if immediate members of your family have been diagnosed, it is important to maintain routine eye tests to ensure early diagnosis if you are to develop symptoms. Anyone with an immediate family history of glaucoma, or anyone diagnosed with it, is entitled to free sight tests on the NHS.
Treatment for glaucoma varies case by case. It can include eyedrops, laser treatment and surgery. Early diagnosis and monitoring are incredibly important, especially if you are predisposed through family history, so ensure you attend regular eye examinations so we can highlight any issues early and preserve your vision.
