Strength training doesn’t have to stop as we age 💪
In fact, it becomes more important!
Around 1 in 3 adults over 65 experience a fall each year. Building strength through simple functional movements, even exercises like wall push ups, improves balance, stability and confidence in everyday life.
Small movements trained consistently can make a meaningful difference. 💜
If you would like support building strength safely and progressively, speak to us about our Prevent+ package!

Don’t fall head over heels this Valentine’s.
Meet Brian - our current Prevent+ client. Brian is 92 and, has been with working with Abney & Baker since June 2025 after a series of falls; which knocked his confidence. But just look at him now! If you'd like to see more of Brian's mobility journey with us, like this post and give us a follow! ❤️
Being able to safely get down to the floor and back up isn’t just a movement - it’s strength, mobility and confidence that matters in everyday life… whether that’s recovering from a stumble, getting to the ground safely if you feel dizzy, or reducing the impact of a fall.
👉 In 2025, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence stated that around one in three people aged 65 and over will fall at least once each year, and this increases with age - which is why strength and balance matter so much.
If you or a loved one would benefit from supported, progressive mobility training, contact us to learn more about our Prevent+ package.
⚠️Please note: These movements should only be undertaken with appropriate professional support. Do not attempt alone or without supervision.

On Friday afternoon, Jeremy Vine on BBC Radio 2 highlighted an issue that really matters to us - carers not always being paid fairly by home care companies.
Sadly, this is something we hear far too often.
At Abney & Baker, we want to be absolutely clear about how we do things:
💜 We pay the full rate for mileage costs, and calculate these in real-life routes.
💜We pay for the full shift, including time with clients, travel time, waiting time and any gaps.
💜 We pay above the minimum wage.
Our carers do skilled, meaningful work, and they deserve to be paid fairly for all of their time and commitment.
If you’re a carer and you’re unsure whether you’re being paid fairly, this website is a really useful place to check:

👉 If you’re a carer looking for a role where you’re valued and paid properly, we’d love to hear from you - message us or visit our website to find out more about working with Abney & Baker.
Fair pay shouldn’t be the exception - it should be the standard.

Love isn’t always about grand gestures.
Sometimes, it’s the quiet courage to start a conversation that protects the people we care about ❤️
If you’ve been carrying the worry of considering care for yourself or someone else, you don’t have to have all the right words.

Time to Talk Day is a reminder that we don’t have to carry things alone.
Checking in with someone can be simple, and it can be powerful.
If you’re struggling, please reach out.
And if someone’s been on your mind… this is your sign to message them.

MYTH: Needing care means losing independence.
TRUTH: With preventative care, the goal is to help you stay independent for longer on your terms.
The right support doesn’t take away control.
It helps protect your routines, confidence, and wellbeing ✨
If you’re noticing small changes (mobility, energy, memory, confidence), early support can make a big difference.

We love seeing what people are reading 📚
These titles are just a small snapshot of books people have enjoyed lately. There’s no right or wrong choice if a book captures your attention, it’s doing its job.

Putting off reaching out for support, for yourself or someone you care about, is completely understandable. Most people do.
That first message doesn’t mean giving up independence or handing decisions over. It simply means starting a conversation, asking questions, and exploring what support could look like.
That’s why we keep things simple:
no hard sell, no expectations, and no pressure to decide anything on the spot. Just a chance to talk things through and see what might help.
✨ If you’ve been putting off getting in touch, consider this your sign - send us a message and we’ll make it feel manageable.

My name is Ian and I’m the founder of Abney & Baker.
As someone who had to find care and support for one of my parents with Parkinson’s and someone who served some time as a director of a major national care chain, I’ve gained unique experience of both sides of the care and support world. I’ve seen the impact of low wages and poor working conditions on staff morale and seen the impact this had on the care that people receive.
During this time, I became convinced that there had to be a better way. A care company who valued and supported its team must be able to provide better care and support to its clients.
The result is Abney & Baker.
From the first day, we have have put treating people right at the heart of every decision we make. Doing better by our employees allows us to do better by clients like you which, in turn, is good for the business.
As a result, I am incredibly proud of how we have built a company that:
scores 97% on independent client feedback (1)
scores 96% on independent employee feedback scores (2)
is amongst Top 20 Home Care Providers in the UK as awarded by homecare.co.uk in June 2020.
has committed to fighting working poverty and has been affiliated with the Living Wage Foundation since the day we started
has staff turnover levels roughly half that of the national average for the care industry
has trained and developed many of our colleagues to become trainers, supervisors or managers
We are family-owned, local and proud of the role we play in our community.
