'Gym Anxiety' Is more common than you think.

Walking into a gym for the first time, or returning after time away can feel intimidating.

Unfamiliar equipment. Fear of being judged. Worry about not knowing what to do.

Here’s the truth most people don’t realise:

Almost everyone in the gym is focused on themselves, not you.

Gym anxiety isn’t a weakness. It’s a completely normal response to a new or uncertain environment. And it’s one of the biggest reasons people delay starting...sometimes for years.

A few important reminders:

- You don’t need to be “fit enough” to start training
- You’re allowed to learn as you go
- Everyone you see confident in the gym was once a beginner
- Progress comes from showing up, not being perfect
Confidence isn’t something you wait for. It’s something you build through small, consistent wins, one session at a time.

If the gym feels overwhelming: Start small. Ask for guidance. Choose an environment where you feel supported. Reduce the noise and focus on what you need.

The bravest thing you can do for your health isn’t lifting the heaviest weight.

It’s walking through the door despite feeling anxious.

You’re not behind. You’re just getting started.

Yesterday in-between 2 PT Clients and teaching a spin classes I did my own strength session and went out mountian biking...as I do every Wednesday. However I hadn't eaten properly and suffered the consequence on a cold and rainy night in the .

Fuel your training or train tired, the body keeps the score.

Too many people show up to sessions under-fuelled and then wonder why performance stalls, recovery drags, or motivation dips.

When fueling is poor, the consequences are predictable:

* Reduced strength and power output
* Early fatigue and slower session pace
* Impaired focus and coordination
* Increased injury risk
* Compromised recovery and next-day soreness

Training places a demand on the body. Fuel is not a luxury, it is the input that allows adaptation to happen.

What effective fueling supports:

* Stable energy throughout the session
* Better quality reps and technical consistency
* Faster recovery between sessions
* Improved body composition over time

You don’t need perfection. You need consistency:

* Eat something before you train
* Prioritise protein across the day
* Include carbohydrates when intensity or volume is higher (this is where i failed)
* Hydrate properly

If you want your training to work for you, not against you, fueling must match the work you’re asking your body to do.

Train with intent. Fuel with purpose.

Even the coach needs a coach.
Today’s session I was doing barbell back squats… with different weight plates on each side of the bar.
Not because it looks cool....but because I was distracted and my mind was elsewhere!
I was aware something didn't feel quite right but i just pushed on thing I was having an off day!

Uneven loading forces your body to reveal:
• hip shift
• trunk rotation
• knee tracking
• bracing weaknesses
• left vs right strength gaps
When the plates don’t match, you can’t hide behind symmetry. The bar tells the truth.
And this is exactly why coaching is vital regardless of your experience!
As a trainer, it’s easy to assume your technique is dialled in. But even when you know the cues… you can’t always see your own compensations.
A coach watching from the outside will pick up:
• bar path drift
• pelvic tilt
• depth inconsistencies
• loss of tension at the bottom
• subtle asymmetries you don’t feel
That’s how you stay sharp.
That’s how you keep improving.
That’s how you avoid building strength on bad movement.
If you want long-term progress, not just short-term PBs you need accountability and technical eyes on you, even when you’re experienced.
Strong people get coached.
Smart people stay coached.

As i was unable to be at the event in person....today I pushed through the grind and cycled 56 miles on the indoor bike - no scenery, no tailwind, just sweat, and determination in support of a great cause.

Every mile was a reminder that when we come together for something bigger than ourselves, the effort is worth it.

This ride wasn’t about me – it was about raising awareness and support for those with stage 4 cancer. Knowing the difference it can make kept me pedalling when my legs wanted to quit.

Thank you to everyone who’s supported, donated, or cheered me on – every bit of encouragement matters.
