It's International Day of the Midwife, and what an honour it is to be a midwife ✨
We are so grateful for all our midwifery friends and colleagues who we are lucky to work with, and who make the job 👌🏼
Being a midwife isn't a job you choose on a whim- it's one that consumes you and pushes you in so many ways. But what a joy it is, amongst the chaos and politics, to support and empower those families as they grow from 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to more!
It's an absolute pleasure to have been part of so many journeys over the years- we have met some incredible women and families, whose strength and determination are like nothing else we have seen ❤️
Thank you midwives 😍

Remembering all those families who are missing their babies today and every day.
Danielle and I remember every baby and every family we have been honoured to look after in one of the saddest moments of their lives.
Danielle's passion for improving bereavement care has now led her to the role of a specialist midwife in bereavement, making positive changes to care, guidelines and policies to improve a family's pathway through an otherwise heartbreaking service 🏥
Always loved and never forgotten ❤️

A top tip for birthing partners to use while their partner is in labour - how to put their hair up!
You may be thinking, what a stupid tip, how will that help? But trust us, we see it all the time!
In labour you're getting hot and sweaty, you're moving position from laying to sitting to having a shower or using the pool or bath. Nothing can be more irritating than having hair on your face and neck or stuck to you!
You may not be able to put your own hair up due to the contractions or you may have a cannula in that's making it more difficult, or you may be using the birth comb or gas and air.
Partners, practice now before the big day. It doesn't need to be fancy it just needs to do the job! A ponytail or a plait, or just shove it all up in a claw clip, whatever works. But it's something super simple that your partner will be really grateful for!

🪷ON HIATUS🪷
Myself and Danielle had a meeting today to discuss the business. We want to be able to provide high quality classes to you, but due to our current and expected NHS/University workloads over the next few months, we don't feel we'd be able to offer this.
Our plan is to spend the next couple of months going over what we offer, how we offer it and how we can improve to make our classes even better for you all!
We're sorry for anyone we've disappointed but we know that this will be what's best for the future ❤️

It's 🍈🍈
If you breastfed your baby, did you breastfeed in public? Was there ever any negativity to you, or any unwelcome comments made?
Always remember, the law protects you if you're breastfeeding, don't be afraid to tell someone where to go whilst flexing the law at them 💪🏼

How do we look after baby's umbilical cord?
The umbilical cord will generally fall off by itself, normally by day 10. This happens by the cord drying out, going black and dropping off. It has no nerves in it and is not painful for the baby.
When you're changing baby's nappy whilst the cord is still on, ensure that the cord is out of the nappy either by folding or tucking the top of the nappy down. This reduces the chance of the cord getting urine on it and therefore taking longer to drop off.
If you want to bath baby before it falls off, you can, but it is better to top and tail baby rather than fully immersing, as again, the cord needs to be dry to fall off.
If you notice any discharge, smell, gunky ooze from around the cord, you can use breast milk on a cotton wool ball or cool boiled water to clean around the base of the stump. If it persists or worsens, ask your midwife, health visitor or GP to take a look.
Note that the cord can fall off in bits; the bulk of it can drop off and leave a small amount still on the belly button. This can be normal, and the other part should drop off as well.
If at any point you have any queries or concerns about the cord, please ask your midwife, health visitor or GP

One of the best tips I can give you when it feels like it's all too much is get out for some fresh air or get in the water ❤️
I'd find that there were days when the boys wouldn't stop crying and I didn't know why. I'd changed them, fed them, winded them, cuddled them, they'd had a sleep and still they would cry.
So we would head out for a walk, in the pram or in the sling, and let the fresh air blow those cobwebs away, like a little reset thanks to nature. Most of the time this would work a treat and they would settle down, and I could get a hot coffee and we could enjoy some baby sensory from the trees, the clouds, and all the different noises 🍃☀️
My other choice would be a nice warm bath. It's something that I enjoy and find relaxing, and so did the boys 🛀🏼
Parenting is hard, some days more than others, so add these little tips to your tool belt and I hope it helps ❤️

When it's absolutely melting outside and your newborn baby just wants to cuddle ❤️
It can be hard when your baby just wants you, and especially wants to constantly feed as they're hot too!
Some ways you can help with this is:
🥵 Loose clothing in materials like linen and cotton
🥵 Place a muslin over your skin for baby to lay on to avoid a sweaty baby head!
🥵 Have a fan on in the room, but not pointed directly at you and baby
🥵 Have a nice cool drink to hand
🥵 If you're outside, get your feet in some cool water and sit under an umbrella/in some shade
