Tamhi Tackling Awareness of Mental Health Issues

Tamhi Tackling Awareness of Mental Health Issues Mental Health Charity: Sports, Youth & Schools Creating an environment where people can ask for help and support when needed.

About Us

TAMHI is a mental health awareness charity set up in 2011 by Joe Donnelly and Stephen McLaughlin in memory of Thomas "Tammy Tucker" McLaughlin who took his own life in 2009. TAMHI stands for Tackling Awareness of Mental Health Issues and the charity is set up to work with sport groups willing to use the power of sport to promote Positive Mental Fitness. Sport is reflective of our society as a whole and therefore it is important that sport addresses the importance of promoting a positive mental fitness for all. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that one in four of us will experience a mental illness at some point in their lives. Participating in sport has a positive contribution to make to a person’s welfare if their experience is one that reflects the positive values of sport;

Fun
Friendship
Commitment
Honesty
Teamwork
Fair competition
Inclusion

TAMHI works with sports groups to support the development of an infrastructure that supports positive mental fitness. The Sports Develop-Mental Approach

Key aims of promoting positive mental health in and through sport

1. To raise awareness within sport of the importance of positive mental fitness and how this can have an impact on physical health.

2. Engaging young people and young men in sport to reach out to those with mental health concerns.

3.To raise awareness of the risks of self–harm and importance suicide prevention within sport.

4. Highlight the importance of training with Governing Bodies, Mental Health Groups and clubs for their coaches and volunteers, to support them in spotting early signs of emotional difficulty and risk in current participants.

Another cracking night with the lads from Man On programme in Carrick last night.

We have been working with the lads , they sort the football and we have been given out information about services and support available as well as chatting to players about mental health.

We have some class ideas to build on. This is a programme for men to come together, play football and talk, chat and share stories.

International Men's Day 2025

What a morning in Trinity Belfast with over 200 lads from Years 11, 12 and 14 talking positive Masculinity and Ending Violence Against Women and Girls.

A combination of debate, games, scenarios and knowledge sharing about the current situation in Northern Ireland.

We shared stories, discussed peoples views on masculinity and we explored our roles in Ending Violence which is underpinned by:

Don't be a CID

Controlling
Ignorant
Disrespectful

Be a GENT

Genuine
Emotionally Intelligent
Non Violent
Trustworthy

And I can tell you this it was brilliant to work with loads of "wee GENTs" and "big GENTs" today.

GENT for us underpins our commitment to men's and boys mental health, we have been doing lots behind the scenes around exploring the new issues of the "Manosphere" where young males are being subjected to a mis-mash of negative messages and unfortunately negative role models.

We can contribute to tackling these new issues ....and we believe it's young people who can make the connection and difference to their peers lives.

Always strange standing in that hall knowing that I sat there over 20 years ago as a pupil (of St Patrick's College aka Barney).

We also did a tour and promoted our Text Teammate 85258 initiative and talked mental health awareness
