Thanks to Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People, Chris Quinn, who met with some of the young people from our Youth Advisory Group to talk about the work they have been involved in over the last four years for the Somewhere For Us project and how bereavement has impacted their lives.

The voice of the young people is impactful and so important, helping us to focus on their needs following a bereavement. It was great for them to be able to share their experiences. ๐Ÿ’œ

This was an incredible meeting ๐Ÿฅน

Commissioner Chris Quinn was blown away after he met the Cruse Bereavement Support NI Youth Advisory Panel this week.

This is a group of young people who have come together to support one another through the many emotions and situations experienced when losing a loved one.

By sharing their feelings and stories, these young people know they are not facing their grief alone.

Chris said: โ€œListening to the voices of young people and their lived experiences of bereavement was incredibly powerful and humbling.

โ€œThe meeting focused on the needs of children and young people bereaved in Northern Ireland, sharing learning from the first year of the service, and exploring how bereavement should be meaningfully embedded within the school curriculum.

โ€œWhat came through so strongly was just how much bereavement can impact a child or young personโ€™s emotional wellbeing, learning, and relationships and why early intervention is absolutely critical.

โ€œWe must be doing more to educate children and young people, and those who support them, about bereavement. Schools need clear bereavement policies and bereavement registers so that a childโ€™s needs are recognised, acknowledged, and met, not missed or misunderstood.

โ€œThis was an informal but deeply impactful conversation, and was I left feeling inspired, challenged, and even more committed to ensuring young peopleโ€™s voices continue to shape how we respond to bereavement.

"Their insight matters and we need to listen.โ€

Bereaved families from across Northern Ireland will come together for a shared moment of remembrance, honouring all those lost during the Covid-19 pandemic. The event will feature moving stories, poetry, and reflections, exploring how grief continues to endure over time. We will also mark International Womenโ€™s Day, celebrating the lives of remarkable women no longer with us while honouring their lasting legacy.

Music will be provided by the young performers of Newtownabbey Arts and Cultural Network, alongside the much-loved Rock Choir. A local piper will lead a minuteโ€™s silence, with the moment formally marked by the High Sheriff of Belfast.

The event will include over 300 Memory Stones of Love, each bearing the name of someone lost during the pandemic. Our HOPE installation, displaying photographs of those we continue to remember, will be on show, alongside a special exhibition capturing reflections of grief experienced during the pandemic.

Also on display will be a series of commissioned portraits by local artist Aidan Sloan, who lost his own mother, Kate, during the first lockdown in May 2020.

On the eve of the Covid-19 Day of Reflection, Belfast City Hall will be illuminated yellow, standing in tribute to all those we have lost โ€” and continue to miss every day.

We thank Belfast City Council for their kind generosity for the use of City Hall. ๐Ÿ’œ
