First off, I know that my issue with this storyline, if addressed on time, would have meant the movie never happened. But just indulge me for a few minutes, okay? π
So my big issue here is not what happened, but WHY?
Just FYI if you haven't seen Gremlins *SPOILER ALERT*: Billy's dad buys an unusual pet from a child against the express wishes of the child's grandfather. Disaster ensues. There's some singing, flashing and carnage, resulting in loss of lives and near total destruction of a town β οΈπ₯
As a kid, watching this a few years later once I was old enough, my 1st question (and 2nd, 3rd, 4th... you get the idea), as always, was WHY? π€
WHY didn't the kid tell Mr P WHY he gave those 3 specific instructions? Did he even know WHY? WHY didn't Mr P ask what would happen if they weren't followed? WHY did Mr Wing have the super-cute, very covetable, mogwai within reach of customers if it wasn't for sale? WHY didn't Mr P respect Mr Wing's refusal to sell? π€π€·πΎββοΈπ€¦πΎββοΈπ©
I was always a WHY kid. I reluctantly obeyed instructions (on pain of punishment) but I always wanted to know WHY it had to be done, WHY I had to do it, WHY that way, WHY then, WHY at all... βββ
I just wanted to know WHY things worked the way they did. And that curiosity eventually led me to wanting to know WHY people do what they do, fear what they fear, want what they want, laugh, cry, get angry, sad, hurt themselves, hurt each other... so I can help them π©Ήπ
I've never been satisfied with "do as you're told" or "just do it and see what happens". I need to know WHY that course of action and WHAT result could be expected. Partly because I want to give the right kind of help, partly because I want to do things once and do them right. And partly for conflict/disaster avoidance... π³οΈ
What do you think? Does the WHY of things really matter? And if not, WHY not? Please share your thoughts below! β¬οΈ
