Hearing loss and Dementia have been studied for a number of years now and the outcome of numerous studies show the same results - one of the most important ways to reduce the risk of dementia is to keep our senses alive, most importantly hearing.

Ringing, buzzing, hissing, beating and even the Christmas Carol...

These are just some of the sounds patients generally hear internally with no external source.

One patient described hearing the Christmas Carol all year around for many years of her life. Throughout the appointment it was then understood that this was her form of tinnitus.

This is a very common issue with people of all ages and backgrounds.

Not all 'ear-pieces' are hearing aids!

Previously amplifiers were provided as a form of treatment for hearing loss. They literally do as they say on the tin - amplify the sound it receives. These generally leads to a lot of feedback and high pitched squealing. They are generally off the shelf with a standard on-fits-all ear-piece.

Hearing aids are bespoke and specifically programmed to the hearing test results. The ear-piece is generally an exact, complementary shape of the person.

There are many environments and settings where many people struggle to hear. This post focusses on the most common places.

It is not just those with existing hearing issues who have trouble hearing speech in these settings, but those with normal hearing too.

Background noise, for example busy restaurants, bars and even family gatherings, can be a real issue because the level of background noise is higher than the speech of a person when they are speaking. This leads to lip reading, constantly asking people to repeat themselves and the most common response - 'SMILE AND NOD' ;)

The 'ear', as you know, goes deeper than you may think!

The ear is split into 3 parts:

- Outer (the part we can see)
- Middle (where the 3 bones live)
- Inner (where the hearing organ itself, the Cochlea, lives

All work simultaneously to receive, filter and transmit the sound off to the brain where it is processed and understood.

Some of you may have been referred to Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department at a hospital/clinic.

Just like most human biology, majority of processes are linked.

One example is a condition called Glue Ear a.k.a Otitis Media with Effusion. This is when the Eustachian Tube, which connects the back of the through to the Middle Ear, opens up which allows a build up of mucus and/or fluid. Symptoms include blocked nose, blocked ears, popping ears, cheek/forehead pains due to sinus issues and ear pain. This can be associated with a cough/cold/flu.

Majority of children under 10 years old suffer with this, some more than others, but it is also common for adults too. An Audiologist can identify this through examination of the ear drum, a hearing test and a pressure test to see how well the ear drum moves back and forth.

01/09/2021

Sound travel through the ear canal and vibrates a thin piece of skin called the Tympanic Membrane a.k.a ear drum.

This is then cause the 3 little bones to move and this send a signal to the Cochlear, the organ of hearing.

The Cochlear then sends a signal to the brain, which is processed and understood... most of the time.

Those who possess a hearing loss have some difficulty somewhere along this path. It is the job of an Audiologist to find out where and guide you on the next steps.

Earwax comes in various different shapes, sizes, forms and colours! Generally the darker the wax, the longer it has been present.

Contrary to what the common belief is, ear wax actually carries great importance in terms of health in the ears.

The ear produces ear wax in order to provide a barrier for the ear canal and to protect the ear drum from foreign bodies, dust/dirt and dead skin cells (Keratin).

Impacted wax is a build of wax, whether short term or long term, whereby the way in which it is presented affects day to day life, for example causing a temporary hearing loss due to not letting any sound pass through.

The treatment for this is ear wax removal via micro-suction or manual removal. Our specialists are all trained to provide this service... and much more!
