📚 Hey everyone! So, I’ll admit, I haven’t been great at posting book reviews recently! 🙈 But fear not, I’ll get to it, just need a few extra hours in the day, you know? 😅 But I really didn’t want this week to pass without shining a light on Children’s Mental Health Awareness week. 💡

I wanted to share a book that’s been incredibly helpful for me as a parent. Layla has been having a tough time settling into school since year one, struggling with low self-esteem and anxiety. It’s been a challenging journey, to say the least. 😔 My once confident little girl now battles with her mental health, and it’s been heartbreaking to witness. I still think there’s a stigma surrounding children’s mental health, especially in certain communities.

But there’s hope! Layla’s doing much better lately, thanks to incredible support from her school and other services. 🌟 One thing that’s made a big difference is the book “Helping Your Child with Fears and Worries” by Cathy Creswell and Lucy Willets.

It’s been a lifesaver, helping us develop strategies as a family to manage Layla’s worries. Plus, it’s given me valuable insights into my own anxiety. If you’re going through something similar, I highly recommend giving this book a read. And remember, be kind to yourself along the way. 💖

Yay or Nay to Elf on the shelf?

If you want to embrace the magic and have a mischievous elf keeping you on your toes, I’ve spotted these in for £4 each! Bargain!

*Note- these are not the original “elf on shelf” brand they are a lot more expensive and representation is 👎🏽

Although It’s a hard no from me. I know it might sound a bit scrooge but I promise you I’m not. I love me a Christmas tradition and I’m actually pretty excited to see all the Christmas stuff starting to appear in the shops. But Elf on the shelf is not something I want to introduce to our house. It seems like so much pressure! Another thing to remember, I’d definitely be the mum waking in the middle of the night shouting out “f**k I’ve forgot to do elf on the shelf” 😂

Anyone already do it or tempted?

Happy Monday! Hope everyone has been enjoying what feels like the first signs of spring?! 🤞🏽🌼

We've been a little quiet over here the last few months because, in all honesty, life has been pretty full on and challenging and this has meant that some time out has been necessary!

As some of you know, Layla's Club is a small business that I (Chantel, Layla's mummy) launched during the first lockdown back in June 2020. It was born out of frustration as a parent through not being able to easily find a good range of diverse children's books from independent stores.

Fast forward to now and somehow, Layla is 4 years old (going on 14, might I add! 🙄) and I'm now a mummy to 2 and still very much adjusting to new baby parenthood all over again. Layla's little brother, Jaiden, is nearly 5 months already and we are very much still in the fog of sleepless nights, postnatal hormones and anxiety. But hey, it's getting easier as the weeks go by... I think 🥴. Tell me parenting two kids gets easier? Please?!

As ever, Layla's Club is open for business as usual. We have a beautiful and diverse range of consciously handpicked children's books available, and we're accepting orders! Follow the link in the bio to see the full collection 🙌🏽

Okay so when it comes to buying for other people's children before making an impulse dash for the kids' aisle in the supermarket and grabbing yet another plastic toy, STOP!

Of course we're biased, but we think gifting books is a much better idea. Not only do they help kids develop the reading, listening and imagination skills they so desperately need - they also don't take up unnecessary space. I'm already breaking out in cold sweats thinking about trying to find the room to fit yet more toys.

OK, who is super organised and has all the Christmas shopping done already, and who is more like me and has barely even started?!

In the past, I've definitely been guilty of getting sucked into the commercial hype of Christmas and over-spending beyond my means. It's no secret that I love Christmas - I really do! - but I hate the commercialisation and the unnecessary pressure parents are put under to have presents piled so high you can't even see the Christmas tree anymore.

That's why I love tips and hacks that help simplify things a bit. So, last year we shared this tip for buying for your little ones and so many of you found it useful that we thought we'd share it again: The Rule of 4.

Simply put, the Rule of 4 allows you to buy a maximum of four gifts:

🌟 Something they want
🌟 Something they need
🌟 Something to wear
🌟 Something to read (our favourite one, obvs 😜)

I'd like to take credit for this tip, but I can't - it's something I saw via page last Christmas and thought it was a brilliant idea to help keep things conscious, under control and on a budget when ticking off the Christmas list.

To be clear! Four is the maximum suggestion and ONLY a suggestion for those who may get a little bit carried away. However, many people may not want or be able to buy four gifts this year.

Christmas will be financially challenging for many of us this year, so be kind to yourself and others. Try other ways to take off the pressure, such as Secret Santa and even handmade gifts with friends so you can either have a limited budget, or no budget at all!

Comment below any other tips, tricks or hacks to help this Christmas - I'd love to hear them.

** TITLE - IN STOCK NOW**

Written by the very talented and beautifully illustrated by Your Skin My Skin is a powerful book to help children and adults have meaningful discussions about race and anti-racism.

Most important of all, the book empowers children to be the best versions of themselves, and to have self-love, self-esteem and self-worth, irrespective of their skin colour. Containing explanations on key words and concepts written in child-friendly, accessible language, with relatable examples, it supports children's understanding in building an anti-racist stance from an early age. It is perfect to read at home, and in classrooms, to support your child's life-long learning journey.

Every child, school and nursery should have this book on their bookshelf.

Also if you head over to page there are some excellent FREE resources that accompany this book.
