Rabbits and Essential oils:

You do have to be much more careful with rabbits than other species. Rabbits are extremely sensitive, and due to the fact that they are hind-gut fermenters, you want to be especially careful with using the oils that have strong anti-bacterial properties, as you do not want to damage the healthy bacteria in their gut that they need to digest forage.

If you are using oils for a specific condition in a rabbit, a very conservative approach should be used - starting with just diffusing the oil around them. If you use a diffuser, it is best to use a water diffuser rather than one that pulls oil directly from the bottle. When you use oils on yourself, be sure your hands are completely dry before petting your rabbit.

Many oils are very safe around rabbits highly diluted - The Protective Blend, all of the citrus oils, the Digestive Blend, lavender, Ylang Ylang, fennel, frankincense, geranium, rosemary, the Cleansing Blend, the Repellent Blend, helichrysum, roman chamomile, myrrh, and the Detoxification Blend have all been used around rabbits quite effectively and safely.

These guidelines also apply to other pets that are hindgut fermenters including Guinea Pigs, Chinchillas, and Sugar Gliders.

Several years ago, I wrote a blog to dispel the concern that it is not safe to diffuse essential oils around cats. I did -and still- err on the cautious side by recommending that it is not a good idea to apply essential oils topically, to never allow your cat to ingest essential oils, and when diffu...
