Birmingham communities sharing opportunities

Birmingham communities sharing opportunities Sharing news about communities and events in Brum It aimed to showcase opportunities for people in Birmingham who have a learning disability.

In March 2011 adults with a learning disability and Birmingham Adults & Communities staff held the first Opportunities Fair. The event was unique because it promoted engagement between exhibitors & visitors. Exhibitors were asked to be creative and think up new ideas for engaging with visitors. Where exhibitors did this it went exceptionally well which was reflected in visitor feedback. The Opportunities Fair became an annual event for 5 years. The aim was to provide an accessible and inclusive environment for everyone who attended. In the second year (2012) it supported people with all disabilities as well as carers. In 2014 the event welcomed and supported any citizen regardless of disability or label. Our aim is to support strong, resilient and inclusive communities. We will help people to recognize the many gifts & skills present in citizens and how everyone has something of value to offer. Due to funding issues the event no longer happens. However, the aims remain. We wish to promote inclusive communities where good news is shared and celebrated. The original volunteers are still very involved in co-production activity supporting the Citizen Voice Team as part of Birmingham City Councils Commissioning Centre.
