PMS and Magnesium

Ladies! Do you become anxious and irritable around the time your menstrual cycle is due? Do you go on a chocolate binge?

Sugar cravings, anxiety, mood swings, irritability, bloating, oedema, headaches, are just some of the common symptoms women experience before and during their me**es.

A fascinating diet review shows that women suffering from PMS typically followed diets that were:

🔸️275% higher in refined sugar
🔸️79% higher in dairy products
🔸️78% higher in sodium
🔸️77% lower in magnesium
🔸️63% higher in refined carbohydrates
🔸️ 53% lower lower in Iron
🔸️ 53% Lower in zinc

Another recent study of 129 women taking magnesium daily showed:

95% experienced less breast pain and less weight gain.

89% Suffered less nervous tension.

43% experienced fewer headaches.

Magnesium has also shown a significant reduction in mood swings according to other studies.

Many women can get depressed before their period, but PMS is not just depression. Though PMS is often considered by medical doctors and pharmaceutical companies to be a psychiatric condition. Commonly treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors like Prozac, serafem.

Lack of fluoxetine is not what causes PMS symptoms; a lack of magnesium does.

The replacement of magnesium in the body can treat PMS and cause no side effects. Infact, it has been found that magnesium relieves depression of premenstrual syndrome by positively influencing serotonin activity naturally.

In Harmony by Celina specialise in magnesium oils. It isn't an 'oil' as such, but a super saturated solution of magnesium chloride.

In Harmony magnesium oil can be sprayed or rubbed on the body and is readily absorbed through the skin. It can help greatly to increase the amount of magnesium in the body tissues and overcomes the problem some people have with loose bowels when they try to take enough magnesium orally to meet their needs.

Sufficient magnesium is difficult to absorb orally because it can act as a laxative. If magnesium goes through the intestines in less that 12 hours, absorption of the mineral is seriously impaired.

Oral supplements can typically take 6 - 12 months to restore intracellular levels. By using Magnesium oil, intracellular levels can be restored within 4 - 6 weeks.

Our Magnesium oils are not only made with the purest form of magnesium chloride, sourced from the Zechstein sea bed.
They are also packaged in high quality dark blue bottles, which helps keep the potency of the Magnesium oils for much longer as well as being eco friendly.

One of the reasons why modern medicine is off balance with magnesium is the way they test it and how it has been tested for the past few decades; through blood tests.
Blood tests do not provide very much information about magnesium, because our bodies control levels of magnesium very rigidly. If magnesium levels drop even a little bit, you're likely going to have a heart attack. In order to prevent this, the body will rob all the cells and tissues, as well as bones of magnesium to keep the blood constant. Therefore if you do a blood test for magnesium, the cells could be empty and totally deficient, and you'll still have normal levels of magnesium in the blood.
Blood tests are not an accurate way of diagnosing magnesium deficiency.

Modern day eating habits are causing magnesium deficiency.
Not only is our food nutritionally deficient. It is toxic.
If you are consuming white sugar, white bread, white rice in any quantity, there is a high probability that you are deficient in magnesium and you need to supplement this essential mineral.

What happens when we are magnesium deficient

Chocolate is one of the highest sources of magnesium - it is why so many turn to chocolate when stressed.

When we are magnesium deficient, we become become
🔹️ Irritable
🔹️ Anxious
🔹️ Trouble sleeping
🔹️ Depression

The modern day lifestyle is highly stressful. People are running the engine of their lives at a high speed, trying to keep up with work, family and friends. This type of lifestyle along with magnesium deficiency is a recipe for disaster.

Our bodies naturally produce the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in the adrenal gland. DHEA helps produce hormones, including testosterone and estrogen.

Matured DHEA levels peak in early adulthood and gradually fall as we age.

Symptoms of low DHEA
🔹️Fatigue
🔹️Depression
🔹️ weak immune system
🔹️Decreased sexual function for both men and women
🔹️Decreased exercise tolerance
🔹️ Loss of muscle tone

Increasing DHEA levels through supplements is recommended by some anti aging specialists, though many warn against their side effects.

Research conducted by Dr. Norman Shealy found that applying magnesium to the skin on a regular basis can NATURALLY enhance the level of this vital hormone and help slow down the process of aging.

Today I want to address how magnesium deficiency can sabotage your mental health. Magnesium is a mineral that has played an incredible role in my own personal health journey.
It is a mineral deficiency that is playing a HUGE role in the current epidemic of mental health disorders affecting the young, teens, adolescents, adults, as well as the elderly.

Let's talk about magnesium the mineral, and magnesium as a deficiency. Why you need to know about it in terms of your mental health.

Most people know magnesium is a mineral. It is an abundant electrolyte in the body. Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. It is critical for cellular energy production. Cells cannot make energy without sufficient magnesium. Magnesium is involved in:
🔹️Regulating our blood sugars
🔹️Relaxing our muscles
🔹️Promoting arterial flexibility, which is important for cardiovascular benefits.
🔹️ producing the neuro transmitter serotonin which is involved in depression, anxiety and in lowering stress hormones.
🔹️Regulating cortisol and adrenaline

Given this, we can expect that if there is a shortage of magnesium in the body, the individual will manifest certain symptoms. Some of which are:

🔴 Fatigue
🔴 Irritability
🔴 Restlessness
🔴 Poor memory
🔴 Rapid pulse
🔴 Headaches
🔴 Trouble sleeping
🔴 Insomnia

The other interesting thing about low magnesium levels from a mental health perspective is that when our tissues become deficient in magnesium, some of the psychological manifestations are
🔴 Irritability
🔴 Hostility
🔴 Quick to react
🔴 Quick to receive criticism

A person's fight or flight system, his/her physiological sympathetic nervous system response and the threshold of this response becomes much lowered when someone is deficient in magnesium.

Magnesium deficiency sabotages our mental health by reducing our ability to properly deal with, and tolerate stress. The stress response becomes highly disregulated. The reason for this is that when we are stressed, our adrenal glands produce more adrenaline and cortisol (the 2 stress hormones). As our adrenaline and cortisol levels increase in the body, we get more magnesium wastage. We begin to loose magnesium through our
🔸️Body
🔸️ Cells
🔸️Urine etc

Causing an increase in
🔴 Heart rate
🔴 Blood pressure
🔴 muscle contractions

If you compare the symptoms used to diagnose GAD (General Anxiety Disorder) to the symptoms of magnesium deficiency, they are almost identical.
When people start to increase their magnesium intake, a lot of the symptoms of GAD become much less intense. People get more energy, start to sleep better and their capacity to let go of worries improves massively. (This is with regards to GAD. With more complex Anxiety there can be other things happening which do require specialised therapy).

Relying on diet alone for magnesium is not sufficient. We need supplementation in order to have a healthy amount of magnesium in our body.

Empaths tend to be chronically deficient in magnesium, often because they tend to give a lot of time and energy to others and don't practice enough self care. Being in a toxic relationship with someone who drains your energy can also deplete you of magnesium. As you can see magnesium deficiency can be caused by both physical and physiological factors.

There are approximately eighteen nutrients essential for healthy bones, including magnesium, the most important mineral after calcium.

The use of calcium supplementation in the face of magnesium deficiency can lead to a disposition of calcium in the soft tissue such as the joints, promoting Arthritis.

Magnesium stimulates a particular hormone Calcitonin, that helps to preserve bone structure and draws calcium out of the blood and soft tissues back into the bones , preventing some forms of Arthritis.
