Understanding Diabetes: A Silent Epidemic
Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. Most of the food you eat is broken down into sugar (glucose), which enters your bloodstream. When your blood sugar rises, your pancreas releases insulin to help the sugar enter your cells for energy.
But with diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use it effectively. This leads to high blood sugar levels, which over time can cause serious health problems heart disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, and even blindness.
Types of Diabetes:
1. Type 1 Diabetes – An autoimmune condition where the body attacks insulin-producing cells. Usually diagnosed in children or young adults.
2. Type 2 Diabetes – The most common form. The body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t make enough. Linked to poor diet, inactivity, and genetics.
3. Gestational Diabetes – Occurs during pregnancy and usually resolves after delivery, but increases the mother’s risk of developing Type 2 later.
Common Symptoms:
• Frequent urination
• Excessive thirst
• Unexplained weight loss
• Fatigue
• Blurred vision
• Slow healing of cuts or bruises
Prevention and Management:
• Eat a balanced, low-glycemic diet
• Exercise regularly
• Monitor your blood sugar
• Avoid sugary drinks and processed foods
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Manage stress levels
