Is your child feeling anxious about school?

Most children returned to school last week, and while new classes, friends, and opportunities can be exciting, the reality of a new school year can also bring feelings of worry.

Mia and Kaitlin from our Children and Young People Mental Health Service have created a helpful video for children and families. It’s full of practical advice to help shrink those back-to-school worries.

In the video, children can learn:
• How to feel more confident in new places and routines
• How to ask questions and be brave
• Grounding techniques to manage anxiety

Parents and carers will also find tips on:
• Listening and validating children’s feelings
• Modelling confidence at home

Whether it’s schoolwork pressure, social worries, or adjusting to a new routine, it’s important to remind children that mental health matters. If they’re struggling, encourage them to talk to a parent, teacher or GP. Reaching out is a sign of strength.

As most children return to school this week, we asked Naomi, Team Leader from our Change Talks team, to talk about why routine plays such an important role in mental wellbeing for children and young people.

In her blog she explains how routines contribute to better sleep and help ground developing brains by reducing the mental energy spent on decision making and worrying about what comes next. Routines offer rhythm, predictability, and a sense of safety which reduces stress and anxious feelings. In a world that often feels chaotic and uncertain, having a rough plan for daily life can bring a comforting anchor.

As September unfolds, allow yourself and your family time to find a comfortable pace. Routine is not the enemy of freedom. It provides the scaffolding that allows young people to flourish within a safe and supported framework. Whether your child is five or nineteen, routines can give them the structure they need to grow, explore, and thrive.

💙 Today is GCSE results day – and we know it can feel overwhelming. Remember: your results do not define your worth. 🌱

Take care of your mental health:
✅ Talk to someone you trust if you’re feeling anxious
✅ Take breaks & do something you enjoy
✅ Celebrate the effort you’ve put in – whatever the outcome

You are more than a grade. 💪✨
