πŸš‚ Why "Real-World" Play Matters More Than Ever 🏁

Did you catch the recent BBC news article about the impact of screen time on our children? Experts are raising concerns about how much time little ones spend on devices, noting that it can affect their focus, creativity, and social skills. πŸ“‰

The big takeaway? Children need "real-world" play to thrive.

At Fun with Trains, we are proud to provide a 100% screen-free zone. When children step into our 500ft railway world, they aren’t just "playing"β€”they are:

🧠 Problem Solving: Figuring out how to connect tracks and navigate tunnels.
🀝 Socialising: Sharing the 100+ trains and working together on the "Big Station."
🎨 Imagining: Creating their own stories with Thomas and his friends.

πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Moving: Burning off energy on our train rollercoaster and ride-on trains!

If you’re looking to swap the iPad for the Iron Road this April, we have two massive Sunday Takeovers coming up:

πŸ“ Egerton: Sunday, 19th April 🏠 Walmsley Parish Church Hall
πŸ“ Middleton: Sunday, 26th April 🏠 Alkrington Community Centre

Give them 90 minutes of pure, immersive creativity (and give yourself a break with a hot coffee!). β˜•πŸ™Œ
Spaces are available for both dates! You can find the booking link in the comments below. πŸ‘‡

πŸ“’ Help us spread the word! If you agree that screen-free play is vital for our kids, please share this post with your friends and local groups. Let's get more children back on the tracks! β€οΈπŸš‚

πŸš„ Bullet Trains and Brilliant Engineering! πŸ› οΈ

It's a quieter day of focused work in the engine shed today. We have a rather delicate repair job on the workbench, and we’ve had to call in our top engineer to sort it out!

The Crisis:
πŸ“‹ Two of our most popular Plarail Japanese bullet trains completely seized up after their last run. Emily managed to provide the essential emergency tea and flapjacks (the Lenten chocolate ban remains firmly in place, not a cocoa bean in sight!), but the tiny plastic motors were well beyond her expertise.

The Fix:
πŸ”§ Neil has stepped up to the plate. It is quite a sight watching someone used to wrestling heavy steam valves using tiny jeweller's screwdrivers to fix a plastic gear! He’s spent the afternoon in total concentration, stripping the engines down and bringing them back to life.

The Supervisor:
🐾 Down on the floor in her new patchwork bed next to the workbench, Smokey the Shed Ghost is keeping a very close eye on all the tiny, bat-able plastic screws. We've had to intercept her a few times to stop pieces going missing!

🟠 Whistle is keeping everyone company from the sidings. There really is nothing our team can't fix when we put our minds to it!

πŸŽ‰ Blue Tracks Packed and a Patchwork Peace Treaty! 🀝

It is a slightly quieter Monday morning back in the engine shed after an absolutely phenomenal weekend out on location! The van is unpacked, the blue track is sorted, and we have some very important diplomatic news...

πŸš‚ The Party:
A massive thank you to the wonderful family who booked us for yesterday's celebration! We had an absolute blast filling the hall with miles of blue Plarail track and watching the battery-operated fleet whizz around. While the family put on an absolutely cracking spread of party food for their guests, Emily kept our crew fuelled behind the scenes with a thermos of tea and her own strictly chocolate-free packed lunch (the Lenten ban is still going strong, not a single cocoa bean in sight for the team!). Willow is still buzzing from helping to run the busy viaduct section!

🎁 The Peace Offering:
After yesterday morning's squelchy boot incident, Neil decided it was time to wave the white flag. On the way back to the shed, we made a highly necessary detour to find the perfect apology gift for the Shed Ghost. Knowing how much Smokey missed her chaotic, disorganised rag mountain, Neil specifically picked out a wonderfully soft, multi-coloured patchwork cat bed.

🐾 The Verdict:
The new patchwork throne was ceremoniously placed on the floor right next to the freshly tidied workbench. Smokey gave the colourful squares a highly judgmental sniff, tested the fluffiness with one white paw, and finally curled up into a tight, contented ball right in the centre. She has, however, dragged two slightly oily rags out of the 'mucky' drum and tucked them in next to her to make it feel more like home. The texture is clearly an acceptable substitute!

🟠 Whistle is gently humming over the inspection pit, very pleased to have a peaceful, drama-free crew back home in the shed.

Neil’s work boots are officially safe... for now! Have a wonderful week, everyone! πŸ’™πŸ§°πŸ±

πŸ₯³ Party Time and the Shed Ghost's Revenge! πŸ‘»

The van is loaded, the blue track is ready, and we are off to fill a village hall with plastic railway joy! But not before a slight, squelchy delay in the shed...

The Prep:
πŸ“‹ Emily is armed with the clipboard, a thermos of tea, and a strictly chocolate-free box of oat biscuits for the crew (her willpower is still going incredibly strong!).

The Helper:
πŸ¦• Willow has the battery-powered fleet perfectly packed and is bouncing on their claws to get to the venue and start building the viaducts.

The Sabotage:
πŸ”§ We were right on schedule to head out, until Neil went to put his boots on. Remember his neatly organized oil drums from yesterday? It seems the Shed Ghost does not forgive or forget. Neil shoved his foot into his left work boot this morning, only to discover a cold, squelchy surprise. Smokey spent the night dragging a heavily oiled rag straight out of the 'slightly mucky' drum and firmly stuffed it right into the toe of his boot.

The Victor:
🐾 Smokey is currently watching from the high rafters with a very smug, highly satisfied expression, while Neil sits on a tub of blue track and scrubs axle grease off his sock in silence. The Shed Ghost always gets the last laugh!

Once the foot is clean, next stop: the birthday venue! πŸš‚πŸ’™πŸ§

πŸ“¦ Plarail Prep and a Promised Spring Clean! ✨

It is organized chaos in the engine shed today as we prep for a massive weekend! We are packing up miles of blue track for tomorrow's party venue, and someone has finally tackled the workbench...

The Pack-Up:
πŸ“‹ Emily and Willow are an absolute whirlwind today, packing up hundreds of pieces of blue Plarail track and battery-operated engines into massive storage tubs. Emily is fuelled entirely by tea and plain digestivesβ€”her Lenten chocolate ban remains absolute, and absolutely no cocoa is allowed near the packing station!

The Clean-Up:
πŸ”§ Remember when Neil promised to spring clean the rest of the shed? He actually meant today! Taking advantage of the distraction, he has hung up every stray spanner and sorted the infamous "rag mountain" into three highly organized, labelled oil drums: 'light up rags', 'slightly mucky for motion cleaning', and 'clean for brass'.

The Brewing Storm:
🐾 And Smokey? The Queen of the Shed is currently sitting on the freshly cleared bench, staring daggers at Neil. He has unwittingly dismantled her favourite, highly curated rag bed. Judging by the twitch of her tail, she is already plotting her revenge...

🟠 Whistle is quietly dozing over the inspection pit, her orange paint catching the afternoon light. She seems to be enjoying the rare, tidy floor!

We highly suggest Neil checks his work boots tomorrow morning before we head to the venue! πŸš‚πŸ§°πŸ’™

As part of the TrackPlay world, we can also offer this service in the north of England. Please get in touch with us here on Facebook and we can arrange it with you. As a side note every 1:00pm - 2:30pm session at our events is our SEND session as we do a slightly different session set-up.

πŸ’› Did you know that SEND support is at the heart of what we do?
We’re incredibly proud to work alongside charities and businesses to create SEND-friendly events β€” and honestly, they mean the world to us. Seeing the joy, confidence and smiles these sessions bring to children (and their grown-ups!) is exactly why we do what we do.

Creating a space where every child feels safe, included and free to play in their own way isn’t just important to us β€” it’s something we truly care about.
If you’re interested in organising a SEND-friendly event, we’d love to chat and see how we can support you.
πŸ“© Message us here or get in touch via our contact form: https://www.trackplay.co.uk/contact

🌈 We also run SEN-friendly sessions within our events.
Our 12:50 – 1:50 session is thoughtfully adapted with:
β€’ Smaller group sizes
β€’ Lowered music levels
β€’ A calm, relaxed and welcoming environment

So you and your child(ren) can enjoy the experience comfortably, at your own pace.
Because every child deserves the chance to play, explore and feel included.

🌸 Light, Life, and a New Fire for Whistle! ✨

The shed doors are thrown wide open today to welcome the sunshine! It’s a very special double-celebration on the railway as we mark both the Spring Equinox and Eid.

Welcoming the Light:
πŸ”§ For Neil, today is about the Equinox. He’s spent the morning doing a ritual spring clean of Whistle’s firebox, sweeping out the winter ash. He just struck the match for a fresh, intentional fire to welcome the return of the lighter half of the year. (He has also firmly promised Emily that a proper spring clean of the rest of the shed will definitely happen "tomorrow"!)

The Feast:
πŸ“‹ To celebrate Eid, Emily has arrived loaded with an absolute mountain of sweet treats and pastries to share. The workbench has been completely cleared of spanners and is now a dedicated buffet zone! Just a fair warning to the crew: there is absolutely zero chocolate on that table. Emily has given it up for Lent, and since it isn't Easter yet, she's firmly banned it from the premises to avoid temptation!

πŸ¦• Willow is carefully arranging a jar of spring daffodils on the bench, though they are highly distracted by the smell of the honey and pistachios.

🐾 And Smokey? Nature is healing. She is currently fast asleep in a sunbeam, covered in a very suspicious, light dusting of icing sugar.

🟠 Whistle is basking in the open doorway, her bright orange paint glowing. As Neil struck the match inside her firebox, she let out a deep, contented sigh of steam. She’s ready for the new season.

Whether you are celebrating Eid Mubarak, a blessed Ostara, or just enjoying the spring sunshine, we send you all our love from the shed! πŸš‚πŸŒ»πŸŒ™

πŸš‚ Light at the End of the Tunnel! ✨

After a really tough few days in the shed, we finally have a reason to get the boiler fired up again. We are thrilled to announce we’re back to work this weekend for a private birthday party for one of our favorite regular Little Engineers!

The atmosphere in the shed has completely transformed overnight:

πŸ“‹ Emily is back in her element. The clipboard has returned, and she is gleefully drawing up a highly detailed, minute-by-minute party timetable.

πŸ”§ Neil has a massive smile on his face. He is elbow-deep in the workbench, testing every single Plarail motor to make sure the fleet is running at absolute top speed for the birthday boy.

πŸ¦• Willow is practically vibrating with excitement, happily loading the transport crates with our best blue track and designing a top-secret birthday spiral.

🟠 Whistle is feeling the energy, too! She’s simmering happily in Bay 1, letting out warm, cheerful puffs of steam. Her orange paint looks brighter than it has all week.

🐾 And Smokey? Nature is healing. She has officially abandoned her quiet, supportive behavior and is currently trying to wrestle a roll of birthday wrapping paper to the shed floor.

Thank you all for keeping our spirits up this week. The fire is lit, and we are ready to roll! πŸŽˆπŸ’™
