So many newborn babies are catching viruses and ending up in hospital, becoming, severely poorly just because someone kissed them, passing on infected germs, that they may not even know they have !
Not letting someone, even relatives kiss your newborn can reduce the risk of infection.

🐵Wash your hands before you touch a baby.
🙊Do not kiss a baby unless you are their parent or main carer – even then, avoid kissing if you have an infection or are unwell.
🙈Do not visit a baby if you are ill, have recently been ill or have an infection. This includes colds, active cold sores as well as diarrhea and vomiting illnesses.

I see so many prams with a sheet or blanket covering the baby in the sun.
Please use a parasol ❤️

Whilst many parents will hang a blanket over their baby’s pram or buggy to protect them from the sun, we advise against it. This is because it reduces airflow around your baby and can cause overheating. Instead, we recommend using a clip-on sunshade or parasol.

Good advice ❤️

Sleeping arrangements checklist 😴 Whether you’re setting up a room in preparation for your baby arriving, or you’re going on holiday and need to work out where everyone will sleep while you’re away, this is the checklist for you!
-
😴 Keep baby in same room as you (day and night) until at least 6mth old
😴 Baby’s sleep space should be away from any radiators or windows
😴 The ideal room temperature is 16-20°C (use a room thermometer)
😴 Bassinets, Moses baskets and travel cots can be good space-saving options

Happy World Doula Week!

We’re sending hugs to all our doula friends this week, along with a reminder of this Cochrane review, which evidences the effectiveness of the kind of continuous support in labour that doulas can provide.

“Historically, women have generally been attended and supported by other women during labour.

However, in hospitals worldwide, continuous support during labour has often become the exception rather than the routine.” (Bohren et al 2017).

So a team of Cochrane reviewers set out to, “…assess the effects, on women and their babies, of continuous, one‐to‐one intrapartum support compared with usual care, in any setting.”

They looked at the results of 26 trials involving 15,858 women and carried out in 17 different countries.

And the results?

“Continuous support during labour may improve outcomes for women and infants, including increased spontaneous vaginal birth, shorter duration of labour, and decreased caesarean birth, instrumental vaginal birth, use of any analgesia, use of regional analgesia, low five‐minute Apgar score and negative feelings about childbirth experiences.

We found no evidence of harms of continuous labour support.” (Bohren et al 2017).

You can read the full Cochrane review at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6483123/

And if you’re looking for birth information, I have a website and several books that will help you make the decisions that are right for you. Including who you might want with you to support you in labour and help you on your journey.

These are the two key takeaways from this year’s :
(1) A firm, flat, clear sleep space helps keep your baby’s airway clear and open
(2) Products that aren’t firm AND flat aren’t suitable for naps or sleeps
