Joanna Atkinson Counselling & Psychotherapy

Joanna Atkinson Counselling & Psychotherapy I offer face to face or online counselling in a discreet and confidential manner for a range of issues. How counselling can help?

Depending on individual circumstances I support my clients using a Person-Centred approach combined with CBT or trauma informed therapy. About me:
I am professionally trained to work with survivors of sexual abuse and violence and am extremely passionate about the subject of trauma. I have been working with clients representing a wide range of issues since 2017. My client group are adults from 18 years of age, many of whom are males seeking support including sexuality issues, anxiety or relationship issues. In my client work I maintain respect, honesty, confidentiality, and a non-judgemental approach. I am registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework. Maybe you feel stressed, depressed, anxious or stuck in a vicious cycle. Maybe you feel confused about who you are or simply need to talk to someone, but there is no-one you feel you could trust. The advantage of talking to a professional is that you don't have to worry about being judged, rejected or misunderstood. While working with my clients I respect their individual needs in terms of what they want to tell me, what they want to change or achieve through counselling. I will be working collaboratively with you to ensure the best possible outcomes you are hoping for. I will be listening to you in a non-judgemental manner no matter what it is you would like to talk about or share. I am here for you to offer you my support to overcome your struggles in the comfort of a safe and confidential space regardless of your gender or age, you must however, be at least 18 years old. For those who fear love and commitment

“You call yourself a free spirit, a ‘wild thing’, and you're terrified somebody's gonna stick you in a cage. Well baby, you're already in that cage. You built it yourself.”

This is a quote from ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’, and yet, true for many of us. It encompasses some common human characteristics or defence mechanisms, such as avoidance of commitment, playing with people’s feelings, unavailability. All this shows on the surface while the excruciating pain of loneliness lies underneath.

It’s a natural fact that we all desire meaningful connections, however out of fear of being hurt we will often push those who love us away.

How does this defence mechanism work and how can we change it? Facing your own fears, probably one of the most challenging steps forward, may be the key to understanding what keeps the pattern alive. The answer can only be found by you.
