What is high cholesterol?

We all need some cholesterol in our blood to stay healthy, but too much can lead to serious health problems such as heart attacks and strokes.

Cholesterol levels can be affected by several factors including lifestyle, diet, genetics and health conditions such as diabetes. Anyone can have high cholesterol, even if you are young, slim, eat well and exercise because it can be a genetic condition.

Cholesterol can clog up the arteries that carry blood around the body, making them narrower and causing blood clots. If the arteries become clogged up, the blood does not flow as easily and this can lead to a range of cardiovascular diseases. The image to the right shows how fatty deposits can narrow the artery.

High cholesterol is very common, but most people don't know they have it because it doesn't usually have any symptoms. That's why everyone should have a cholesterol check. There are treatments available for high cholesterol, but it's usually possible to lower cholesterol naturally with healthy lifestyle changes

Making a Difference Together: Oesophageal Cancer Awareness Month 2026

OPA Cancer Charity provide vital support to individuals diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, as well as their caregivers, families, and loved ones. Alongside support services, they work tirelessly to raise awareness of oesophageal cancer, with the aim of encouraging earlier diagnosis and improving survival rates.

Understanding Oesophageal Cancer

Oesophageal cancer affects the gullet – the tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. Over the past 40 years, the prevalence of this cancer has increased significantly. There are around 9,400 new oesophageal cancer cases in the UK every year, that’s 26 every day (2017-2019, CRUK) making awareness and early detection more important than ever.

Recognising symptoms early can make a real difference. By increasing understanding of oesophageal cancer, we hope more people will seek medical advice sooner and access the support they need.

Raising Awareness This February

This February, during , we encourage everyone to take time to learn more about the signs and symptoms of oesophageal cancer, as well as the support and resources available for patients and families.

will take place on the 10th of February 2026, with celebrations and learning based around the theme ‘Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’.

With many children and young people hearing about and using AI online, it’s important they have the skills and confidence to make safe choices when they are using smart technology.

This year, Safer Internet Day aims to explore the impact of AI on all of our lives, looking at how AI can be used for good, and giving advice and guidance that empowers people to use AI safely and responsibly

💌 Send a Card to a Friend Day

A small card can make a big difference. Today’s the perfect excuse to brighten someone’s day, remind them they matter, and strengthen the connections that keep us going.

Whether it’s a handwritten note, a doodle, a postcard, or a simple “thinking of you”, it all counts. Little gestures land big.

- Share a favourite memory
- Tell them something you appreciate about them
- Send a joke or something that made you smile
- Let them know you’re cheering them on
- Remind them they’re capable, valued, and not alone

You never know how much someone might need that tiny spark of kindness today. And honestly — it feels good on both sides.

Pop a card in the post, drop one through a letterbox, or hand it over with a smile.
