Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique used for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes physical and emotional healing. It is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive.
Etymology and Origin
The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words:
• Rei: "Universal" or "Spiritual Wisdom."
• Ki: "Life Force Energy" (similar to Qi in Chinese or Prana in Sanskrit).
It was developed in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui in Japan. He envisioned it as a way for people to heal themselves and others by becoming a "conduit" for this universal energy.
How It Works
A Reiki session is typically non-invasive. The recipient stays fully clothed, usually lying on a massage table.
• The Technique: The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above specific areas of the head, torso, and back.
• The Transfer: Practitioners believe they are not giving their own energy, but rather channeling "universal energy" to the recipient to help clear blockages and balance the body’s energy centers (chakras).
• The Sensation: People often report feeling a sense of warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation. Some even fall asleep during the session.
The Five Precepts (Gokai)
Reiki is not just a physical practice but a spiritual one. Mikao Usui taught five central principles to be practiced daily:
1. Just for today, I will not be angry.
2. Just for today, I will not worry.
3. Just for today, I will be grateful.
4. Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
5. Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
Common Benefits
While not a replacement for traditional medicine, Reiki is often used as a complementary therapy to:
• Reduce stress and anxiety.
• Promote deep relaxation and better sleep.
• Support the immune system.
• Aid in pain management and recovery after surgery.
• Foster emotional clarity and spiritual growth.
