IVF Triplets Born in Sussex After 16 Years of Hope and Heartbreak
After 16 years of trying to become parents, a couple from Uckfield, East Sussex, are celebrating the arrival of their “miracle” triplets.
Claire Tait, 40, and Paul Bradley, 48, endured a long and emotional journey to parenthood — a decade of trying naturally followed by six difficult years of IVF treatments.
Over those years, the couple went through five rounds of IVF, experienced one miscarriage, two failed transfers, and even had to face the heartbreak of a medical termination.
“It was incredibly tough — a complete emotional rollercoaster,” Claire said. “You never imagine you’ll struggle to have a baby. Nobody prepares you for that. We just kept thinking it would happen eventually.”
After medical tests revealed fertility issues on both sides, doctors told them IVF was their only option.
Then, on their final attempt, just after Claire’s 40th birthday, they received the news that would change their lives — not only was she pregnant, but with three babies.
Paul recalled: “We couldn’t stop laughing on the drive home from Brighton. We just kept saying, ‘Three! Three! Three!’ It was amazing — and terrifying.”
The pregnancy was considered high risk, and the couple were anxious throughout. “We tested constantly and didn’t let ourselves get excited until we reached 24 weeks,” Claire said.
At 33 weeks and one day, on November 21, Claire delivered identical triplet girls — Mia, Isabelle, and Lilly — at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. All three were born by planned C-section within one minute of each other, between 12:39 and 12:40 p.m.
“There were about 25 people in the room,” Paul said. “Each baby had their own medical team. It was amazing and overwhelming all at once.”
The girls were transferred to the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, where they spent two weeks before finally coming home.
“They did incredibly well,” Claire said proudly. “All the doctors kept saying how strong they were. They all came out screaming — it didn’t feel real.”
Now home with their six-week-old daughters, the couple are adjusting to life as first-time parents — times three.
“It was a shock that first night,” Claire admitted. “We’ve never had one baby before, so learning to care for three at once is a whole new world — but a joyful one.”
Although IVF can slightly increase the chance of identical multiples, the odds of naturally forming identical triplets remain extremely rare.
“They really are miracles,” Claire said. “It was our last chance, and now we have three beautiful girls. It’s perfect.”
Paul added: “They’re going to be best friends for life.”
The couple expressed heartfelt thanks to the Agora Clinic, where they received their IVF treatment, and to the antenatal and neonatal teams at both hospitals.
“Our case was complex, but the team never gave up on us,” Claire said. “We’ll always be grateful for the incredible care and the amazing start they’ve given our little girl gang.”
