this is the latest statement i have received about the walks. The more I read the more confused I am. Our Public Health and Partnerships Manager has provided the following response:
Some important points for this listed below as there seems to be a lot of misinformation about this however basically we are not cancelling them because we can't. We're not pulling funding for walks as the walks are not funded by us.
The walks are not run by RCBC, they are The Ramblers Association, we have no management over the walks
We do not and have never funded the walks, they are volunteer led and the Ramblers Association request a monthly payment to them for £3.75 per person to attend any walk. We do not pay for or make any money from the walks.
We have no power to stop a volunteer groups operating in the borough, they are entirely independent from us.
We fully support the volunteer groups to continue we have no power to tell them to stop but would not anyway as they are great social capital for our area.
We have previously funded some insurance (and for the purposes of transitioning) and will fund for 1 further year whilst we support all walk leaders to work with us to find alternatives for next year onwards

Mondays walk is from Marshall Drive Playing Field 10.00, the fields are still very muddy so will have to be another road walk open to offers if anyone knows a route we could do

18/02/2026

Gary Wilson from the walks phoned, saying he will be on the walk on March 2, if anyone would like clarification on the position with the Walking for health scheme

Could I ask as many people as possible to email their local councillors and MP about the lack of support of these popular walks which are very important for everyone

13/02/2026

just received a email with bad news about the walks the management team can no longer be involved in coordination the walk service so if we cannot get any funding the walk will come to a end on April 1, 2026, I am trying to arrange a meeting with Gary to see what we can do, its possible we could continue as a friendship walk which means we will have no insurance. The walks a very important for people health and mental health, I will do my best to keep the walks going
