Intention, Yoga & Nidra - Repetition, Relaxation and Rejuvenation
Sunday 1st Feb 4.30pm - 6.30pm
Imbolc marks the beginning of the return of life to the land. The dark days are behind us and we really start to see signs of rebirth; the green shoots of the spring crocuses and daffodils poking through, buds on the trees starting to open. Another Spring and Summer are ahead. Where are we going with our path this year? To explore we have a special event of 3 yogic practices:
Likhita Japa is a practice for spiritual, mental and emotional wellness, involving repeatedly writing mantras as a form of meditation or devotional action. This practice helps with concentration and is a lesser known but simple and effective method of meditation. Additionally you create a beautiful design to take away with you. In this workshop, we will also consider how this might be used with sankalpa/intention in order to set us up for the year to come.
The relaxing yoga practice will involve longer held physical poses with plenty of use of props to support the body. There will be personally tailored options, and gently moving counter poses between the longer held poses. This style of yin yoga fosters a calm energy and allows the fascia (connective tissues wrapping our organs and muscles) to release.
Yoga nidra, on the other hand, is not a physical movement practice; participants find a comfortable place to rest - again props are always encouraged to help you find stillness - then we allow the body to completely rest while the mind follows the full nidra technique into an effortless and restorative state of complete "non-doing".
These 3 practices together will help us explore our soul's purpose, and encourage a deep relaxation of not only the body, with deep release found in the stretches, but also a deep rest for the mind, as it is led through the layers of consciousness to a state of bliss.

Today we welcome in the calendar year 2026. What will you welcome in to your world this year? I'll be moving and breathing, dreaming and creating - and trying to share as much of that as possible with those around me.
As we head to another Full Moon on 3rd Jan there's a new yoga pose blog available on the website at www.essentialyoga.uk/blog so find some inspiration to look at things from a different perspective there.
Also a quick reminder to book your place on the special event for Imbolc - taking a creative look at intention/sankalpa/mantra as well as gently moving and finding the bliss of yogic sleep. Places are filling up fast, so book yours at www.essentialyoga.uk/events-workshops

The next New Moon is just round the corner, so here is great pose in which to pause, and from where we can easily move forwards to a multitude of possibilities. Where will your next steps towards 2026 take you? Where do you wish to head? Perhaps a sankalpa is forming to help you follow your path.

Welcome to Essential Yoga

Having danced since aged 2, and still dancing today, I moved over time to include more and more yoga in my movement practice; it’s not only great for the body but also brings massive mental and spiritual benefits.

I’ve always been driven to seek new knowledge, and share that understanding with others so it was kind of inevitable I became a fully qualified yoga teacher. So building on that solid basis and decades(!) of experience of different movement forms, I aim to help others find the all-round well-being that yoga can provide; Strength, stamina, the ability to be still, and, yes, in due course, increased flexibility. Yoga bring benefits to everyone, and can be practiced by every body, regardless of size, shape, age, gender or fitness.

With a focus on good alignment, careful transitions, and a linkage to how each person feels at any given time, Essential Yoga classes provide a thoughtful path to physical, mental and spiritual well-being. I particularly follow the natural seasons and rhythms of the wheel of the year, and classes are designed to work with the varying needs and feelings those changing seasons bring.

My classes are friendly and empowering with a welcome for all. I aim to create a relaxed, learning atmosphere, where each person can take their practice to the level they wish, and to provide a mix of energising and relaxing asanas/poses and pranyamas/breathing. I also like to bring some explanation of phrases, terms, physiology, concepts, philosophy etc into the classes to aid understanding of the “why” of yoga.
