Christmas Design Challenge: How would you improve the cracker?

Consider the poor grip for pulling, the unpredictable failure point, the inefficient packaging and the questionable ratio of toy to packaging.

If we received this as a design brief, we would have questions:

- Would the pull force need to be optimised?
- Should it be redesigned for single-handed operation?
- Should the snap mechanism be made more reliable?
- Could the paper engineering for the hat be improved?

But, honestly? Sometimes, a design is perfect precisely because it's imperfect. The awkward pull, the off-centre snap and the paper hat that never quite fits — that's the experience.

What actually is prototyping, and why does it matter?

Prototyping is when you make an early model of a product to test ideas, how it works and how it looks before making it in large amounts.

Think of it as your product's first interaction with the real world.

The most important thing to know is different stages of development need different types of prototypes. Trying to create a "perfect" prototype too early wastes time and money.
