Much of the weight of products comes from uncertainty.

If you’re unsure how a structure will behave, the standard response is to add more material. Make it thicker. Make it stronger. Just in case.

This approach is effective, but inefficient.

Once you have a proper understanding of the load paths, you can start removing the excess material. You stop designing for 'worst case everywhere' and start designing for what actually happens.

That’s when lightweight design becomes possible.

Not through guesswork. It's through clarity.

Although our work covers a wide range of product types and industries, our underlying approach always remains consistent.

Each project focuses on how a product will perform in real-life use. This includes how it is assembled, how it behaves over time and how it can be reliably manufactured.

Our portfolio reflects this. It includes early-stage concepts, test systems and fully developed products that have been taken through to production.

Looking through our completed projects is often the clearest way to understand how we approach and solve different challenges.

Most products start out as something quite simple. They begin as an idea, a sketch or a rough concept of how something could work.

The process of turning that into a real, working product is where the complexity begins.

This involves making decisions about materials, structure, manufacturing methods and how the product will be used on a daily basis. Each stage builds on the last, so small choices made early on can have a significant impact later on.

We support that process.

From the initial concept to testing and production, our focus is always on ensuring the final product functions as intended in the real world.

If you have an idea you want to develop, it usually starts with a conversation.

“Why does modular design matter in public-use systems?”

Because maintenance is inevitable.

In environments where equipment is used frequently, its components wear out long before the overall structure does. If replacing a damaged part requires dismantling half the system, the resulting downtime and costs can escalate quickly.

A modular design enables individual elements to be removed and replaced without affecting the surrounding components. This reduces repair time, limits secondary damage and keeps systems operational.

In practice, this means designing clear interfaces, accessible fixings and components that can be reinstalled in the same place every time.

Our blog covers a range of topics, including test fixture design, mechanical reliability, precision motion, design for manufacture and system-level integration.

These articles are based on project experience rather than theory. They explain why decisions are made, highlight potential trade-offs, and identify areas where problems may arise if issues are ignored in the early stages.

Even a product that looks good on day one can still be a design failure.

Longevity is determined by stiffness, alignment, wear behaviour and accessibility. Not finishes. Not renders.

Public-use systems illustrate this point brutally. Scratches appear. Components loosen. Loads increase. Users do not adapt to the design.

Good product design assumes change — and builds resilience into the
system from the start.

At Cambridge Design and Technology, the goal is not to prevent change. It is to make sure the system still works when change arrives.

That is where trust is earned.

We design for long-term wear by assuming it will happen everywhere.

Wear is not confined to moving parts. It also occurs at interfaces, fasteners, alignment features and contact surfaces that undergo repeated loading.

Designing for durability requires an understanding of where material will be lost, where tolerances will increase, and the effect this will have on function over time.

This often results in design choices such as hardened interfaces, replaceable wear components, and ample access for inspection and adjustment.

Durability is not achieved by overbuilding everything. Rather, it is achieved by placing strength and protection exactly where they are needed.

International Women’s Day this year is about Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.

Those words are deliberate. Rights mean access and opportunity. Justice means fairness in systems, not gestures. Action means doing the work, not just talking about it.

In engineering, design and technology, progress comes from recognising the contributions of women, both past and present and continuing to remove the barriers that limit participation and progression.

Today is about acknowledging this work, supporting it and committing to making practical progress.

Happy World Engineering Day!

Now is a good time to remind people that engineering isn’t just about making things work on paper. It's also about ensuring they can withstand the real world.

Great design can grab people's attention. However, good engineering is what enables that design to perform reliably, safely and consistently over years of use, regulatory scrutiny, manufacturing constraints and evolving requirements.

At CDT, engineering is never treated as an afterthought. It is embedded from the outset, influencing decisions relating to materials, tolerances, integration, manufacturability and long-term performance. This systems-based approach transforms concepts into durable products.

“Why does accuracy and repeatability matter so much in test fixtures?”

One successful test proves almost nothing.

If you cannot repeat the results under the same conditions, you cannot trust the data. If you can’t trust the data, every subsequent decision becomes weaker.

This is why fixture design places such a strong focus on stiffness, alignment, and controlled motion.
