Samhain (pronounced “sow in”) is an ancient Celtic festival that marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It’s celebrated around October 31st to November 1st, and it’s considered one of the most spiritually powerful times of the year.
At Samhain, it’s said that the veil between the worlds - the realm of the living and the realm of the spirits is at its thinnest. This means it’s easier to feel the presence of ancestors, loved ones who have passed, and other unseen energies. It’s a time for reflection, remembrance, and letting go of what no longer serves you as the old year ends and the new one begins.
Here are a few simple ways to honour Samhain:
🕯️ Light candles for your ancestors or those you’ve lost. You can speak their names, share stories, or simply sit quietly and remember them.
🍎 Share a meal with family or friends, and maybe set a small plate aside for the spirits as a gesture of respect.
🍂 Spend time in nature. Notice how the earth is preparing for rest and think about what you, too, might release or rest from.
🔮 Divination is also traditional at this time - tarot, scrying, or simply trusting your intuition, since the veil between worlds is said to be thin.
🖤 Reflect on endings and new beginnings. Write down what you’re ready to let go of from the past year and what you’d like to welcome in the next.
Samhain is both solemn and beautiful, a moment to pause between the light of summer and the dark of winter, honouring life, death, and the cycle that connects them all.
