The Common Ailments Service covers 28 conditions and is available at ALL community pharmacies across Swansea Bay.

Pharmacists can offer free over-the-counter treatments for a number of ailments without the need to see a doctor first.

You just have to register with the pharmacy to be able to use the service, which just takes a few minutes.

The 28 ailments covered are: acne, allergic rhinitis, athlete’s foot, back pain, chickenpox, cold sores, colic, conjunctivitis, constipation, dry skin, diarrhoea, dry eyes, haemorrhoids, head lice, indigestion/reflux, ingrowing toenails, intertrigo, mouth ulcers, nappy rash, oral thrush, ringworm, scabies, sore throat/tonsillitis, teething, threadworm, urinary tract infection (UTI), vaginal thrush, and warts and verruca.

Each community pharmacy has a private room where the consultations are held.

During the consultation, the pharmacist will discuss your symptoms with you and decide whether it would be best to offer advice only, treatment or refer you to a doctor.

There’s no need to make an appointment beforehand, you can visit your local pharmacy to discuss their availability on the day. You may be asked to call back at a more appropriate time or directed to a neighbouring pharmacy.

You can find more information about the Common Ailments Service on our website: https://sbuhb.nhs.wales/community-primary-care/primary-care/pharmacists/

Did you know you can receive advice and treatment from independent prescribers at community pharmacies across Swansea Bay?

The service allows independent prescribers to give advice, make referrals and prescribe medication for a variety of ailments.

It can help to relieve pressures on GP practices, with the qualified pharmacists assessing appropriate patients without the need for an appointment.

Currently, the service is developing with 35 independent prescribers in Swansea Bay, so please contact your local pharmacy to ask if it is available.

Community pharmacists must complete an accredited course to qualify as an independent prescriber.

Appointments to see an independent prescriber aren’t essential but depending on availability, you may be asked to call back at a more appropriate time. Other community pharmacies may require an appointment.

The independent prescriber will carry out a consultation in a private room where they will discuss your symptoms.

They will then decide whether it’s best to offer self-care advice, make a referral to a GP or another healthcare professional or provide treatment.

People suffering with sore throats can be assessed and even treated close to their home without the need for a GP appointment.

The sore throat test and treat service is now available in all 90 community pharmacies across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot ahead of winter.

It follows Welsh Government investment that allowed the Common Ailments Service to expand and become available in 99 per cent of pharmacies nationally.

The popular service is available to everyone over five years of age.

It will enable more patients to be assessed and treated, if needed, closer to home without the need for a GP appointment.

To access the Common Ailments Service, people must register with the pharmacy which only takes a few minutes.

Consultations are carried out in a private room and if the pharmacist decides they still need to see a doctor they will be referred.

Sam Page, the health board’s Head of Primary Care, said: “This has helped to increase the number of clinical services available in community pharmacies.

“Many patients go to their GP practice for a sore throat but now they can be seen at a community pharmacy near them.

“The expansion has helped to make the popular service more accessible in all of our communities.”

Management of sore throats as part of the Common Ailments Service allows pharmacists to assess patients aged over five with a sore throat.

During the assessment, the pharmacist will decide whether it is appropriate to swab the patient’s throat and, if so, the result will determine if the sore throat is due to a bacterial infection.

Once the throat swab test has been carried out, patients only have to wait a few moments to receive the result.

Depending on the result and the patient’s symptoms, treatment may be offered by the pharmacist, without needing to get a prescription from a GP, or self-care advice will be provided.

Sam added: “Community pharmacies may ask patients to call back or book them into an appointment, but it has still reduced the need for them to make a GP appointment.”

There are some people for whom the service is not suitable. They are advised to contact their GP practice if:
• Symptoms are persistent and haven’t improved after a week.
• They have a weakened immune system or are immunocompromised.
• They have a high temperature that isn’t controlled by paracetamol or ibuprofen.
• They have a medical condition or have had frequent sore throats in the last year.

💉 The Immbulance will be at Morfa Shopping Park tomorrow between 10am and 4pm for a catch-up flu clinic.

💉 Missed your flu vaccine appointments or yet to be invited?

We will be running catch-up clinics across the Swansea Bay UHB area over the month of December at different locations.

These offerings will be for all eligible adults, and children aged 2 to 16 years old (who will be given the fluenz nasal spray 👃).

🤧 Every year, millions of people in Wales get vaccinated against the flu virus to protect themselves, loved ones and their community.

Flu can be life-threatening, especially for those most at risk of serious illness. This winter, flu is circulating earlier than previous years.

❄️ No one wants to be ill over the winter period. Your best chances of protecting yourself, and to stop the spread of flu to those you care about, is by getting the flu vaccine.
