Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) occurs when degeneration of the intervertebral disc leads to protrusion or extrusion of disc material, causing compression of the spinal cord. This disrupts neural signalling, resulting in pain, altered proprioception, weakness, or paralysis.
Post-operative IVDD:
Following surgical decompression, veterinary physiotherapy aims to protect the healing spine while restoring mobility, preventing muscle atrophy, and supporting neurological recovery. Rehabilitation is carefully progressed to retrain gait, balance, and functional movement in line with tissue healing timelines.
Conservative IVDD management:
In non-surgical cases, physiotherapy focuses on pain management, spinal stability, maintenance of muscle mass and joint range of motion, and controlled neuromuscular re-education—reducing the risk of further disc injury while promoting safe recovery.
Individualised veterinary physiotherapy is essential in optimising outcomes for both surgical and conservatively managed IVDD cases, supporting long-term function and quality of life.
