⚠️Today, our ED is busy and means that some patients who have less serious conditions are waiting longer to be seen by our clinicians.

👀 Our colleagues are working very hard to ensure that all patients in the department are seen by clinical priority - this means that if you, or a loved one need medical attention and your condition is NOT life threatening or an emergency, including if you have deteriorated rapidly, then you’d probably be better off being seen by clinicians in another facility faster.

🩺We designed our ED to ensure that those with the most serious or life threatening injuries who need immediate help are seen in an area specific to their needs: Majors, Resus or in our Ambulance Assessment Area. Children have a specific paediatric area, designed to keep them entertained and as calm as possible whilst they wait to be seen.

🚑These areas are behind the main waiting area so, even though the initial ambulatory (walk in) area may not look busy, it is likely that, behind the doors, there are patients needing specialist care having suffered a medical episode or trauma and our clinicians will be supporting them to ensure that they are stabilised and treated as quickly as possible.

⏰So, if your condition doesn’t need emergency treatment, you may wait longer to see someone – and get back home.

➡️Please consider using alternative services for non-emergency health issues:
✅ Self-care: Manage minor ailments at home.
✅ Pharmacy: Get expert advice and over-the-counter treatments.
✅ GPs: Schedule an appointment for ongoing health concerns.
✅ NHS 111: Call or visit online for urgent medical advice.
✅ Urgent Treatment Centres: Urgent medical help when it’s not a life-threatening emergency.

🩺Our hospital is very busy today and 45 of our patients in our Majors area of ED right now need the highest levels of care. This means that those needing non urgent treatment will need to wait longer as we continue to treat our most poorly patients.

🛌Due to the continued pressure we have 18 patients waiting for onward admission to an inpatient bed in the ED.

🤧The early flu season is also seeing a higher number of both colleagues and patients suffering from seasonal respiratory illnesses which is also impacting us.

🏥Our priority remains the safe care of all our patients, and we are asking for you – our community – to support us.

➡️ED is not the place to be if you need care that is not urgent or life threatening. We are absolutely here for you if you need us in emergency or life-threatening cases, or if someone has deteriorated rapidly – but please help us to relieve some of the pressure on our services if you could be seen somewhere else such as a GP, NHS111, a community pharmacy or an Urgent Treatment Centre. You can find more information here: https://bit.ly/crhftrs

🏠If your loved one is an inpatient with us and getting ready for discharge, then please make sure that everything is in place for their return home and speak with our colleagues to make sure that you know what they need. about discharge and what you need to do to support this.

💙Thank you to all our teams who continue to work under pressure and thank you to our community for their support and for they really need.

🎉 150,000 tests and counting – thanks to our CDCs!

Since Whitworth CDC opened in late 2021 and Walton CDC joined in September this year, our North Derbyshire Community Diagnostic Centres have delivered over 150,000 diagnostic tests.

Without this investment, all these tests would have taken place at Chesterfield Royal Hospital – adding pressure to acute services and parking. Instead, we’ve:

✔ Moved many routine diagnostics into the community
✔ Saved hospital capacity
✔ Improved patient choice and convenience

What is a CDC?

It’s not just an X-ray department – it’s a modern centre offering:

🩺 X-rays | CT scans | Ultrasound | Blood tests | Audiology | Cardio-respiratory

Patients say:
💬 “The CDC is brilliant – less stressful than going to the main hospital. Seen on time if not before!”

Same care, same results: Our staff rotate from the main hospital site, so you’ll receive the same level of care and turnaround times for results.

Our Emergency Department is very busy today, and may not be the best place to come if your condition isn’t an emergency.

We always prioritise patients by clinical need, so those who are most unwell are seen first. This means the waiting room might look quiet, even when our teams are working intensely behind the scenes with patients who need urgent care.

In this video, Stacie, our Emergency Department Matron, takes you on a tour of the department and the areas where our sickest patients are treated.

We hope you enjoy the tour and hope you never need to see these areas in person.

Our message is simple: we are here for you when you need us, but please use our services wisely so we can care for those who need us most.

🎄A huge thank you to St Peter & St Paul School! 🎄

We were delighted to welcome the children from St Peter & St Paul School into our main entrance today for a wonderful carol performance. Their singing brought much joy and festive spirit to staff, patients and visitors.

We were also grateful to Reverend Martyn Jinks for sharing a thoughtful address, and to everyone who kindly donated to Chesterfield Royal Hospital Charity.

The kindness and community spirit mean so much to us at this time of year. Thank you for helping to make the hospital feel a little brighter this Christmas. 💙✨
