Hands up if you believed yoga was nothing more than the shapes we make on the mat? Same, friend, same. Then I did my yoga teacher training and an entire world of magic opened up before me!

And now I get to share everything I learn with YOU.

For me building awareness around the yāma and niyāma means I can enter my personal practices of breath work, āsana and meditation with more awareness around what I bring into my practice and what I want to learn, build upon or learn when I begin.

Patanjali says that “When the mind becomes calm, free of desires and obligation, we see the cause and effect because we are detached from it”.

Building awareness around the things we feel obligated to allows us to begin to let those very things go.

Like everything, this takes time, practice and patience, along with the first four yāma; ahiṃsā, satya, asteya and brahmacarya.

To observe and action brahmacarya, we must first acknowledge ahiṃsā (non-violence), build honesty (satya) around our practice, and where we might be stealing the joy (asteya).

This brings us to a place of moderation, building more awareness around what we bring to our personal practice every time we roll out our mat, practice breath work, or meditate.

The key take away this month is the second of three super full moons, and they're all important in their own way for three reasons:

1. Each month we have a new energy; October was all about that Aries fire and courage. November brings with it that earthy, Ta**us energy, asking us to tame the fire and anchor down into our morals. December’s Gemini energy will be about communicating with confidence and conviction

2. The dates are also significant. October 6th, November 5th, and December 4th. In numerology these dates each add up to 7. In numerology 777 symbolises rewards and wisdom, a fitting end to a transformational year, wouldn't you agree?

3. Super full moons are called this because the moon is much closer to the earth, which means we feel her energy much more intensely.

Keep an eye out for part 2 in the end of year trilogy videos I’m sharing for these three very significant super full moons. This month's goes live at 7:45pm UK time

Asteya is the third of the five yāma, and asks us to identify where we might be stealing from ourselves as well as others.

Maybe we bring too much of our ego onto the mat and find that we punish ourselves when we practice yoga, trying to contort our bodies into shapes that actually do not feel good in that moment - we are literally stealing the joy from our personal practice, which defeats the whole purpose of us practicing in the first place!

We all have our own truths, which is why it’s important to question dominant narratives by being open to alternative viewpoints.

Being truthful does not mean being unkind. The truth does not always have to hurt. If anything honesty is the kindest approach.

What Arjuna is saying when he asks Krishna to take the reins, is guidance towards a greater sense of calm.

The senses are a mirror which, when focused outwards become a reflection of our external environment, drawing in everything we experience, and stimulating our monkey mind.

Once the senses are turned inwards, peace can eventually, be found.

Meditation is a whole process. One that takes time, patience and perseverance to feel comfortable with. A path so many of us give up before we’ve even truly started, because we don’t know this truth and because we bring with us so many expectations of ourselves, and what we think it should look like.

Next time you try meditation, let go of your expectations as much as you can and instead, observe where your mind wanders, then bring it back to your breath.

What a beautiful morning we had last Saturday at The Pavilion Chichester, learning more about how stress, overwhelm and anxiety can show up in our physical body, specifically the psoas muscle.

Have you ever heard your yoga teacher talk about hip openers and releasing stress but not giving any more details or context? Yeah same, and it’s kinda frustrating because the science behind this is actually really cool and it’s all to do with the iliopsoas muscle (often called psoas for short) 🤓🤓🤓

The psoas muscle originates in the lower lumbar vertebrae (lower spine), travels through the pelvis and inserts into the femur (lesser trochanter of the femur to be precise, basically the very very top of the thigh bone).

This deep rooted, rope like muscle becomes tighter and tighter the more time we spend in a seated position, and inadvertently becomes the muscle that stores all of our stress.

So naturally if we begin to move in a way that includes shapes like kapotāsana (pigeon), anjaneyāsana (low lunge), chandrāsana (high lunge), or malāsana (yogi squat), we begin to physically release that stress, which in turn may evoke an emotional response in some people as well.

So next time you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, maybe give yourself 10 mins to stretch out your psoas muscle to release the physical tension from your body.

Next time you feel a wave of emotions during a yoga practice that is particularly hip openers heavy, now you know why!

What does ahiṃsā mean to you?

Ahiṃsā started out as me learning to be kind to myself first and foremost because for a long time, I absolutely hated myself, and was genuinely convinced I was a bad person.

And it’s hard to see kindness and love outside of you when you don’t see it within you. To an outsider, I was angry at everything and everyone but inside I was so fu***ng sad, beyond sad, I was depressed and I didn’t want to exist anymore.

Learning to show myself compassion was the first step, and ahiṃsā was part of that. I was learning the yāma before I even knew of their existence.

Kindness to ourselves and others is not always easy. Sometimes it’s really fu***ng hard! But yoga has taught me that it’s an ever-evolving process. Sometimes I’m kind to myself and not others. Sometimes I’m kinder to others than myself. Sometimes I’m kind to me and others, and sometimes I’m really unkind. I’m human. I f**k up. We all do.

But I always catch myself, and I know when I am being particularly unkind, chances are I’ve also been neglecting my practice.

It can be really fu***ng hard to be kind when there’s so much cruelty in the world, but that’s when the world needs our kindness the most.

Next time you practice āsana, notice your internal dialogue.
Next time someone challenges or provokes you, notice how you react.
Next time your loved ones annoy you, notice the words that tumble out of your mouth before you’ve even considered them.

Being kind in the face of cruelty is not a weakness. It’s a fu***ng superpower. And it does not make you a pushover.

Do no harm. Take no s**t.
