From the ground up ⬆️ 🦶🏼
Exactly why it’s so important for Dancer’s to take care of their hard working busy feet and take professional expert advice about them, so experience in foot health, movement and careful pointe shoe fitting is vital, even ill fitting soft stretch canvas ballet shoes can contribute to unhelpful changes in the feet, ankles, knees….

This is a very thought provoking and emotive subject.
I find the comments interesting in response to posts like this . .
The Dance Industry has always been competitive, but it seems as though even now, people are very quick to be strongly opinionated and very judgmental about other Dancers and how they manage themselves and their body, immediately comparing it to their own experience as if just because they didn’t happen to suffer in this way, or had the need to use cushions, there must be an issue.
Each pair of feet are unique to the Dancer, just as the way they use their feet is unique in the pointe shoes of their choosing. Every foot points differently, some toes curl more than others, some cross over, some longer than others etc etc , that’s before looking at width, type of toe box shape and cushioning, the list goes on.
Some Dancers like to feel their feet a certain way in their shoes, their own choice of cushioning or other toe protection, or lack of, is indicative of that. Personally I like to promote a feel the foot, the shoe, the floor with minimalistic styles of protection or combination of things that targets key areas of concern.
The injuries to the feet can be caused by so many different things happening and it’s true that sometimes certain types of cushioning, with wear and tear and sweat from hard working feet, can hinder and end up not helping much at all.
I often come across younger Dancers wearing enormous thick silicone toe pads that have been fitted with a pointe shoe 2-3 sizes up from their normal foot size, which I feel must be deceptive for their proprioception and at the same time, there are those “hardened” Dancers and still some Teachers of the old school, that feel their students shouldn’t be wearing anything to protect their toes and feet, as if somehow the pain and injury is something they must endure, just as they once did years ago.
I think we may have moved on a bit since those days, where all we had available to us was a bit of compacted Animal Wool and in any case prevention is better than cure! 💁🏼‍♀️
