On behalf of Cathy and I, I’m so very sad to share the sudden and tragic loss of our beautiful Indie on Wednesday morning, following a violent episode of colic.
Indie has been a huge part of my livery from the very first day she arrived. She had the most unquestionable temperament and the most solid, loving personality. A true Heinz 57 with unrecorded breeding — the sort you simply can’t make anymore. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve said, “You can’t buy a horse like Indie,” and even more times I’ve told people, “You need an Indie” when they were searching for their next horse.
She was that special.
At one point I had the idea of breeding from her, because a temperament like hers deserves to be carried on. Given her age (19 at the time), we discussed embryo transfer into my other mare, who was pregnant with Betty. Cathy loved the idea and we started looking at stallions that would complement Indie’s incredible nature.
Then once Betty arrived, Cathy caught a wave of baby fever and we said, “Sod it — let’s see if she’ll take.” Indie was always destined to be a mum, and true to Indie, she took first time.
Twelve months later, along came Sky — and she shocked us all with her bright orange hair (especially considering the stallion was grey!). But from the very start, she had Indie’s expressions, her softness, and that same beautiful, genuine nature. It was impossible not to see her mum in her. I’m so grateful that Indie had the chance to be a mum, something she was so clearly always meant to be.
She gave everything in life — her kindness, her honesty, her heart — and we are absolutely devastated that her time with us has been cut so cruelly short.
Thank you to everyone who loved her, fussed her, rode her, and appreciated just how rare she was. She really was one in a million. 💔
