⭐Did You Know?⭐
A normal newborn feed has 3 parts to it!
1️⃣
At the start, baby will initiate a letdown with strong sucks, and this is where it's really normal to see stimulating behaviour (you know, those frustrating head bobs or bats of the hand 😅). It's also where you'll see the 'toe curling discomfort' of the initial latch on as baby works to get the milk flowing.
2️⃣
Then we get to the main bulk of the feed. Baby should be doing 1-2 sucks per swallow, with regular pauses, just like we would when drinking. The milk is flowing freely so baby is getting most of the milk transfer here.
3️⃣
The final part of the feed is what we call fluter sucking. The flow of milk has slowed and baby may even have fallen asleep! While this is the point where you may wish to take baby off and either swap sides or put them down (and this is absolutely fine), it can still be an important part of the feed - and the perfect reason to sit back and rest for a bit longer ❤️
