There is so much to say around what is going on with maternity services at the moment. It is my honest belief that no one goes to work planning to disrespect and disregard women and yet it feels like that is what is happening over and over again. Now Midwives are being told that physiological birth it's a dangerous ideology and women are being told that what they want doesn't matter. I feel like we are living in some kind of dystopian nightmare. We shouldn't have to fight to be heard and respected in our birth space.

I left nursing to be able to support women in a way that felt authentic to who I am and my values. I had found myself cross with the system I was a part of on a daily basis, and it was affecting my ability to hold space for the ladies I was working with.

Since I left to be a doula a year ago the failure of maternity services has been ever more present in the news. I have found the last month especially difficult and quite frankly scary. I didn’t become a nurse or doula to make millions, I genuinely do it for the love of witnessing the effect on lives good support can have.

I have been wrestling with myself over what impact I can have on a wider scale, but I don’t have a big platform and I’m not good at pulling together reports and writing persuasive letters. My value comes from the individual work I can do.

To that end I have decided to offer my doula services at a significant discount during this difficult period so that women are not left to go it alone. If you book me before Christmas I will offer the low price of £500 for my birth package in the hope that it gives more women access to invaluable support in protecting their birth space.

It scary having choice taken away from you, but there is a whole team of doulas and independent midwives fighting to get this support reinstated ASAP.

I love this time of year but that's not true for everyone in my house. I like to romanticise it by decorating for autumn, we have an autumn treasures tray on our table to show off the various bits and pieces we've collected on our walks. I also bring out the various knitted pumpkins I've made over the years. The blankets come out in full force, everyone has them in their rooms and there are plenty available in various spots round the house. We actually have 5 sofas so lots of places to snuggle up. It's fire season so I like to invite friends over for a cosy evening in, sometimes I pull out all the stops and make a 3 course meal, other times it's just a hot chocolate and a film. This is the time of year I dust off the fondue set!
