For those that already foster you will appreciate that many children in care have experienced trauma that affects their brain development. This makes survival-based behaviour a natural response.

Foster parents that view these actions as a means of communication and not disobedience, respond with empathy and support, rather than frustration.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 '𝐌𝐘𝐓𝐇 𝐎𝐅 𝐍𝐀𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐘 𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐍

We live in a society where care-experienced people face a lot of prejudice, even as they leave care and enter adulthood. Some people mistakenly believe that children are taken into care because of their behaviour, a stereotype which particularly affects older children and teens in care.

There’s a huge range of potential reasons why a child may enter the care system, none of which are their fault. Perhaps a child has lost a parent in death or has been removed from their home due to a parent’s reluctance to end a relationship with an abusive partner. They may also have faced neglect or abuse. These things can have a huge impact on every aspect of a person’s life, including their development, behaviour and health outcomes in later life.

Here are some further facts about childhood trauma and childhood behaviour that you might find beneficial.

👉Childhood trauma impacts brain development

When a child is exposed to traumatic circumstances, it can impact the way their brain develops and affect the rate at which they hit normal milestones. When the brain has been in a constant state of high alertness to cope with threat, in a constant state of fight of flight, it dampens a child’s ability to develop higher skills such as regulating their emotions and being able to make safe decisions.

👉Behaviour always communicates a need

A great way of understanding behaviour is remembering that every behaviour can be read as a form of communication. Many of a child’s behaviours may be influenced by the trauma they live with

👉Co-regulation strategies to practice with your foster child

One of the biggest ways you can support a child in moments where their behaviour is challenging is by building a safe and trusting relationship with them over time. This allows them to explore, build resilience and develop healthier coping mechanisms when they’re feeling upset or unsafe. Here are 3 tips for effective co-regulation with your foster child.

Always try to be patient.

This weekend, our foster carers and foster children took part in another one of our social events. This time we visited Planet Leisure in Aycliffe.

The children had an amazing time creating memories on the trampolines and then had some delicious food afterwards.

Making positive memories together like this is really important to us. It shows our foster children that they matter. It helps them feel seen, valued, and part of something.

𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧?

It doesn’t matter. You can be single, married, living together, in a civil partnership or divorced. What does matter is that you have the capacity to care for children in need of help and support.

❌𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡

𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫?

Not true. You can be in rented accommodation and still foster. We look for people who have a spare bedroom and a welcoming home environment for children. Have a chat with your landlord and find out if they have any restrictions or concerns that may impact your decision.

𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐈 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤!

Think about your job. Do you have the availability or flexibility to care for children as well? We know that children coming into foster care need consistent caregivers. Someone who can be there to help and support them and meet their needs.

𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐲 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧, 𝐬𝐨 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫?

Many carers do have their own children. We work with our carers to carefully match foster children to the needs of your household. Having your own children gives you valuable experience that can help when a child is placed with you. Your own children will need to be ‘on board’ with becoming a foster family.

𝐈’𝐦 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐆𝐁𝐓𝐐+ 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐬𝐨 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫?

We do not discriminate. Anyone can potentially become a foster carer. If you have the capacity to provide a caring home for a child, then you have the potential to be a foster carer. Our foster carers are amazing caring and compassionate people.

𝐈’𝐦 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫?

In fact there is really no upper age limit to foster. What really matters is that you are physically active and healthy enough to support the children in your care every day.

𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫?

So not true! In many ways having pets can be an asset to a foster family. But, we will check your pets as part of our fostering assessment process. We’ll want to know about how they behave particularly around children and people they don’t know. As a pet owner, you also need to think about how you might react and what you would feel if a child hurt one of your pets.

As it stands, only 6% of initial fostering enquiries result in an approved foster carer status. This highlights a complex challenge in the UK’s foster care system.

We know that the process can be slow and sometimes discouraging and this is often down to practical barriers like finances and spare rooms, stringent (though necessary) checks, lack of adequate support, and the personal fears and perceptions that prospective carers carry.

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐖𝐄 𝐃𝐎 𝐓𝐎 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒?

To improve this conversion rate, efforts must be data-driven and holistic. We must streamline the bureaucratic journey, invest in supporting applicants, address the tangible obstacles (with policy changes where needed), and actively nurture the motivations that lead people to consider fostering in the first place.

By implementing these recommendations, agencies and policymakers can make it far more likely that a person who inquires about fostering today becomes the much-needed foster carer of tomorrow.

Lets be honest, the stakes are high and each additional approved foster carer means a stable, loving home for a child who might otherwise miss out on the care and support they need.

We are delighted to announce that following our recent Ofsted inspection, we have been rated as 𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 for our residential services.

Getting an 𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 OFSTED grading is 'no piece of cake'. It is a real team effort and we thought we would start the celebrations by getting a bespoke cake made 🎂

Our former foster child went on to say that through his foster carers he was taught about budgeting, time management and career planning. In addition to this, his foster carers placed a lot of emphasis on education in the hope that it would create better employment opportunities and financial independence.

He said that "without this care and support I would not be where I am today. I am forever grateful to my foster carers and will not forget them for the rest of my life."
