❓ DIRECT PAYMENTS: Common Questions Answered ❓
(Helpful info from Essential Care Support)
If you or a loved one has been assessed for support by the Local Authority, you may be offered Direct Payments. Here are some of the most common questions we get:
✅ What is a Direct Payment?
A Direct Payment is money paid to you by the Local Authority to help cover the cost of your care and support needs.
Instead of the council arranging carers for you, you arrange the support yourself — giving you more control.
✅ Who can get Direct Payments?
Direct Payments are usually available to people who:
• have had a care needs assessment
• have been assessed as needing support
• are eligible for council-funded care
✅ Do I have to use a council-approved provider?
Not always - With Direct Payments, you can often choose your own domiciliary care provider — including a private provider like Essential Care Support, even if they are not on a list supplied by the Local Authority.
✅ Can I top up the cost if I want more care or a private provider?
Yes, in many cases - Some people choose to add a private top-up alongside Direct Payments to access:
• Additional hours
• Longer Visits
• More Flexibility
• Preferred Provider
• A Higher Standard or More Personalised Care Service
✅ What can Direct Payments be used for?
Direct Payments can be used for support such as:
• Personal Care (washing/dressing)
• Meal Prep/Support with Eating
• Medication Prompts and/or Management
• Shopping Support
• Companionship and Wellbeing Support (Help At Home)
✅ Do Direct Payments have to be managed by the person receiving care?
No. If needed, Direct Payments can be managed by:
• A Family Member
• A Trusted Representative (LPA)
• An Appointed Support Service
✅ Can Essential Care Support help me understand my options?
Absolutely 💙 - We can explain the process clearly and help you understand how Direct Payments can work with your care plan.
