We want every teacher to know about Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)!

It is a common condition affecting around 2 children in every class of 30, so chances are there are children in your class with DLD. Because awareness is low most people with DLD don't know they have it. Instead they struggle with reading and learning. They might even think of themselves as stupid because they don't 'get it' when really the issue is with spoken language.

JOINT ATTENTION is a communication skill which does not require the use of words

A child must master this skill BEFORE they will begin using words

They must learn that eye contact and gesture ( no talking required) can be used to request what they want before they will use words to request what the want or need. If this skill is delayed, talking will also be delayed.

Tip: put a desired or favourite object of your childs out of reach e.g on a shelf but still so they can see it. Observe how they request you to get it for them.

❄A cold and frosty 1 it is indeed.....❄

Singing songs is a fun and engaging way to encourage children to complete routines with less stress.
It promotes more verbal output as the pressure to talk is removed.

It also introduces are children to:
🎶 rhyme (early literacy)

🎶 new words/signs

🎶word patterns

🎶builds attention and listening

🎶 it's fun and more engaging

Through REPETITION these elements of language will become embedded and children will begin to use in their everyday language.
(When we say repetition, yes we do mean 100 million times 🤣) children learn through constant repetition and they ❤ prediction and routine.

Remember it doesn't have to always be a rhyme you know, you can sing any words and make it up as you go.

Did you know that there’s a font designed specifically for dyslexic people to read easier. Every dyslexia case is unique, and this font acts as a learning tool to ease the brain. Definitely worth trying it out to see if it will work as a strategy.
