✨ Hair Loss & Low Iron — What You Need to Know ✨
Did you know that low iron levels can have a direct impact on your hair growth?
Iron plays a vital role in carrying oxygen to your cells — including your hair follicles. When your iron levels are low, your body prioritises essential organs over hair growth… which can lead to increased shedding, thinning, and slower regrowth.
But what about ferritin? 🤍
Ferritin is your body’s stored iron. Think of it as your “iron reserve.”
You might have normal iron levels in your blood, but if your ferritin is low, your body doesn’t have enough stored iron to support healthy, consistent hair growth.
✨ In simple terms:
• Iron = the iron currently circulating in your blood
• Ferritin = the stored iron your body can draw from when needed
✨ What levels are important for hair growth?
• Ferritin levels for optimal hair growth are typically above 70 µg/L
• Many people with hair loss have ferritin below this, even if it’s within the “normal” medical range
• Iron levels vary, but low iron alongside low ferritin can worsen shedding
For healthy hair growth, both levels matter.
Low ferritin is one of the most common causes of hair thinning we see — especially in women — and it’s often overlooked.
If you’re experiencing hair shedding, thinning, or poor regrowth, it’s always worth checking your levels with your GP or specialist.
