Bank holidays ….
As someone that’s worked in a 24/7 365 days a year environment for many years ,public holidays are just that -For the general public and that’s not us.

That missed family time , connections , switching off at the same time as everyone else is yet another loss , missed opportunities.

If you’ve had experiences linked to operational work and you’ve noticed they still have some impact -feel those warning light coming on especially around personal loss or how things are processed. If that’s sounding familiar then it’s likely this space would feel relevant.

But there’s no obligation to decide that straight away. You’re welcome to just be around and see how it feels.

The online space was held yesterday evening. Myself & Volunteer H were on hand with a warm welcome.

These spaces can take time for people to feel ready to step into.

For many, it starts with reading posts, following the page, and quietly considering whether it feels like the right fit.

If that’s where you’re at, that’s completely understood and that’s OK.

The space will continue to run each month, and you’re welcome to join whenever the time feels right.

For many in operational roles, there’s a very real need to just get on with things.

Experiences are often carried quietly or ‘put in a box’ while the focus stays firmly on the job.

Spaces like this aren’t about changing that . We’re just offering somewhere, without judgement that those experiences can be acknowledged if and when someone chooses to -

It’s also recognizing that non operational losses , not just bereavement, can have an everyday impact.

BUT -they don’t have to be lonely or ‘put in a box & forgot’

An insightful article from an organization I’m a member of . Looking at the pressures we put on ourselves to feel we should be doing things a certain way or are we doing enough ….

Grief does not offer clear answers. There is no fixed pace, no universal standard, and no reliable measure of progress. Yet people continue to measure themselves, often harshly.

A reminder that the next Operational Loss & Everyday Impact online session will take place this Friday at 5:30pm.

It’s a calm, structured space for veterans and blue light personnel to talk — or simply listen — around the impact of operational experiences and personal loss.

There’s no expectation to speak, and cameras and microphones are always optional.

Some people attend just to get a feel for the space first.

If it feels like something that might be useful, you’re welcome to join.

Sometimes people follow a page like this for quite a while before reaching out.

That’s completely understandable.

If anything shared here ever resonates with your own experience of operational work, loss, or the quieter impact those experiences can have later on, you’re always welcome to send a private message.

There’s no expectation to explain everything — sometimes just starting a conversation is enough.

Dates of significance be it personal or public such as the most recent , Mother’s Day for example , can sometimes highlight something many people in operational roles recognise.

When the job requires focus and resilience, personal experiences often get placed to one side so the work can continue.

Over time those moments can sit quietly in the background.

For some people that’s absolutely fine.
For others it can take a little longer to understand the impact certain experiences have had.

Both responses are more common than people realise.

Days like Mother’s Day can bring a mix of emotions.

For some it’s a time of appreciation.
For others it can carry memories of loss, complicated relationships, or moments missed because the job came first.

In operational roles, it’s not unusual for personal experiences to be set aside while the focus stays on the work in front of you.

If today feels straightforward, that’s good.
If it feels more complicated, that’s also completely understandable.

However the day lands for you, take it at your own pace.

I’m conscious many veterans go on to work in blue light services.

Over the weekend many people marked Covid Day of Reflection.

Having worked in complex care during that period, it’s a time that still sits quietly in the background for me.

For many in frontline roles — health, blue light, and care — it was a period where the focus was simply on continuing to show up and do the job.

Only later do some people begin to notice the impact those experiences may have had.

That delayed awareness is something I see often in grief work, and it’s part of the reason spaces like Operational Loss & Everyday Impact exist.

Not everyone needs to talk about those experiences straight away — but having somewhere steady available can matter.
