We live in a busy world. We can become carried away with keeping on keeping on, seeking distraction, and find ourselves in a state of constant stress. This can mean we miss our surroundings. From bird songs, the sound of the wind in the trees or the sun rising and setting. We become strangers to ourselves. Missing any form of connection, both physically and mentally, as we continue with distraction and become too busy to just stop and take in who/what we are at any given time.
This is one of the reasons that slowing down through meditation, Yin Yoga, or Sound Baths can be so rewarding yet so challenging for a lot of us. When forced to just stop and be present with minimal distraction, we can feel as though we're in an alien environment as we sit with our senses physically and with our thoughts. Those thoughts can be what we've failed to acknowledge. What we've wished to run from. A fear of accepting where we are and why we are like we are? This can be truly daunting at times, but with practice and dedication, we can develop this way of slowing down and assessing ourselves. Allowing a connection to who we are to be a regular habit we appreciate each day. Slowly finding ourselves less of a stranger to be around and more of a friend. The benefits of allowing this time to ourselves, to become accepting of how we are there and then, can be one of the most rewarding parts of this time we can have alone on our mat or as a group in a class. Letting yourself discover you again and loving yourself for who you are is an incredibly important part of life that so many of us miss out on in the day-to-day.
So, make a promise to yourself for yourself. Dedicate some time this week to set aside to be present without music in your noise-cancelling headphones, without the distraction of phone doom scrolling, and to concentrate on the present moment. It could be for 2 minutes at the start of your day, or it could be through a type of class that facilitates this...but I urge you to just try it and keep the practice of becoming comfortable in being with yourself a regular habit. Enjoy.
