Today marks the 68th anniversary of The Munich Air Disaster, which occurred on 6th February 1958 when British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off in poor weather conditions at Munich-Riem Airport in Munich, West Germany.
The aircraft was carrying the Manchester United football team, nicknamed the "Busby Babes", along with supporters and journalists.
There were 44 people on board, 20 of whom died at the scene. The injured, some unconscious, were taken to hospital, where three more died in the following days.
Our local boy, Duncan Edwards, was one of the casualties.
Duncan, England and Manchester United football legend, who was born on the 1st October 1936 in Dudley, in the heart of the Black Country.
Duncan was one of the ‘Busby Babes’, the young United team formed under manager Sir Matt Busby in the late 1940s. Duncan, the big number 6, who was 5ft 10" and weighed just under 13 stone was nicknamed ‘The Tank’.
Despite his age, Edwards had already played 177 times for United, with 18 caps for England. He was one of the eight players who tragically died from injuries sustained in the Munich Air Disaster whilst returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia).
Aged just 21, Duncan died 15 days later on Friday 21 February. His grave is situated in Dudley Cemetery and is still always covered in Manchester United & England football memorabilia.
Now, 68 years after his life was cut short, Edwards’ memory and legacy still lives on. The Duncan Edwards Leisure Centre in Dudley is named in his honour, while a section of the Dudley bypass is named Duncan Edwards Way, a street near where he is buried in Dudley Cemetery was renamed ‘Duncan Edwards Close’ in 1993.
Perhaps most famously, a stained-glass window depicting the player was unveiled at St Francis’ Church in Dudley by his mentor and manager Matt Busby in 1961. His statue also stands in Dudley town centre, unveiled in 1999 and re-dedicated in a special ceremony in 2015.
Jones Memorials proudly produced and erected a memorial in Dudley Cemetery in memory of Duncan which marks his resting place.

The Christmas period is officially over and our decorations have been taken down. Have you remembered to remove the Christmas wreath from your loved ones memorial?
We get enquiries every year regarding ‘rust marks’ & stains on memorial stones.
After discussing with our callers, the cause is generally a Christmas Wreath or Cross that is based on a ‘chicken wire’ frame or has been secured in place using florists wire.
Rain and snow causes the metal components to rust and this stains the stone.
Prevention is always better than cure… to prevent this, ensure that wreaths or Crosses are based on non metallic frames and secured with non metallic ties eg string, ribbon or cable ties.
Or even better still not actually placed directly onto the polished stone.
Removing rust stains varies, depending on how severe. Unfortunately, sometimes staining cannot be completely removed from the memorial.

A massive congratulations to our very own Ross Hickton!!!

Ross Hickton, Managing Director at Hickton Family Funeral Directors, is officially the SAIF President for 2025-2026. Ross is also the first President born after SAIF was founded. A very well-deserved honour! 🌹

SAIF (SAIF independent funeral directors) was established in 1989 to support family owned, and independent funeral directors, concerned about the proliferation of larger conglomerates. It currently has around 1000 members across 1,850 funeral homes, as well as an additional 100 Associate members who supply products or services to the funeral profession.

Although Ross will be taking up this national role, he will still be in the family business and conducting funerals for our local communities.
