🕊️ World Su***de Prevention Day – 10th September
Today we pause with compassion to honour every life touched by su***de, and to gently raise awareness around perinatal mental health.
💗 For many parents—especially in the early months and years—feelings of overwhelm, isolation, and quiet distress can be hard to name, let alone share. But you are not alone. Your feelings matter. You matter.
🔍 In the UK and Scotland:
Su***de remains the leading cause of maternal death between six weeks and one year after birth.
Around 1 in 5 mothers experience perinatal mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and trauma-related symptoms.
1 in 10 fathers experience depression during the perinatal period, and many more struggle with anxiety, stress, or feelings of exclusion.
Partners of mothers with moderate to severe perinatal mental health difficulties are more likely to experience mental health challenges themselves, which can affect their relationship with both the mother and the baby.
Depressed fathers are less likely to engage positively with their babies, which may impact early bonding and child development.
This year’s theme, Changing the Narrative on Su***de, reminds us that open, kind conversations can save lives. Let’s create spaces where all parents—mothers, fathers, and carers—feel safe to speak, to be heard, and to ask for help without fear or shame.
