✨ “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”
– Henry David Thoreau.
This beautifully captures the essence of experiential learning with horses.
In equine-assisted learning, what a client sees in a horse’s behaviour often reflects their core beliefs — the deep-seated ideas we hold about ourselves, others, and the world around us.
These beliefs act as lenses that shape how we interpret every experience. Two people can be in the same situation and respond completely differently, depending on what their lens allows them to see.
For example, a client approaches a horse, and the horse walks away. One person might think, “The horse doesn’t like me,” while another wonders, “Where is the horse going?”
Neither is inherently right or wrong — but both reveal something about the beliefs that drive their perception.
Even when core beliefs are inaccurate, they still influence our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Limiting beliefs can lead to self-doubt and disconnection, while balanced beliefs foster curiosity, understanding, and growth.
The beauty of working with horses is that their feedback is clean and immediate. They reflect our inner world without judgment, helping clients see their own patterns clearly — often in ways that lead to powerful self-discovery and transformation.
