'Coaching' as a word isn't one that really vibes with me. Coach makes me think of sweaty teenage jocks & striped uniforms. And whistles & baseball caps - eurgh. (The only type of hat I just look daft wearing boohoo)
'Teacher' wasn't a title I loved either back in the noughties when I first donned that cap. Teachers were waaay older than my fresh-faced 21years of age and just seemed so, so, so... Sensible! 😂 Teacher has grown on me over the years, though, and I totally do recognise that almost everything I do comes under one (or many) of these banners:
- teaching
- facilitating learning
- leading
- educating
- coaching
- mentoring
I describe what I do now as Teen Coaching. It's the best word I've got for holding safe space for fledgling adults to find their own path. I can showcase tools, teach strategies, distill difficulties and be solution focused but it's all about that young person upskilling, being empowered and transforming their wellbeing independently. And, most importantly, being able to take improved self-care of their mental wellbeing from that point onwards.
If I don't make myself obsolete, then I haven't delivered the change I intended.
That's what I mean by coaching.
Sometimes, one word just can't sum it all up 🤷♀️
