"That's how we've always done it" remains the poorest, laziest defence for safety failures, and will offer no adequate explanation to either the courts or to the families of someone, your employee, injured through that attitude.

Think back to 2005. A long time ago, wasn't it? The Work at Height Regs were introduced (but to replace existing legislation with similar requirements), and what was one of the risks identified right from the off? Yup, the risk of falls from LCVs. Front and centre of the launch campaign.
So why has industry still to react? To catch up? To change?
It's not ignorance. There have been cases of serious and fatal accidents, There has been publicity, I've shouted it from the rooftops (and adequately protected van tops) So why then? Complacency?
What was I doing in 2005? It was the year I joined HSE.

If your workers are ever on top of your LCVs (whether loading or as a working platform) as an employer THEIR Safety had better be top of YOUR agenda.

Pride may come before a fall, but what comes after doesn't bear thinking about - Injury, lost time, enforcement action, fines, HSE FFI costs, and worst of all, potentially having to break the news to an employee's family that they are not coming home.

It's not worth the risk. Is it?

A wee trip to A&E with number 2 son the other evening (He's fine, nothing serious) and I couldn't help noticing that if your van doesn't have VEPS, you might just see something very similar to stop you having another fall, this time after your trip in an ambulance.

The list of his injuries makes for stark reading. Still think it's 'safe' for your staff to use door mounted ladders to access items carried on their van roofs? He's one of the lucky ones.

This apparatus is shown in guidance HSG144 - Workplace Transport Safety in Construction as a means of avoiding falls from height whilst loading / unloading.

Imagine you could take this with you to all sites, and erect it in under 10 seconds? That's what VEPS set out to achieve.

We hope VEPS will be included in the updated guidance due soon.

Great to be invited to talk about Work at Height / Falls from Vehicles at the HSE / Working Well Together SHAD at West Lothian College today. 130+ Apprentices, lots of great feedback, couple of mentions of Dragons den and a wee photo shoot on the way home. All good!
