JOY

😀When was the last time you found the joy in your workday? Whilst some days it might be harder to spot, there are moments of joy in every day when we work alongside athletes and support staff.

🙌🏼From my experiences in sport, it is easy to treat every day and every interaction as a trigger for stress and increased work load. Taking the job seriously is important but remembering to have some fun will sustain you in your role!

🥳Take time to pause and have some fun, find the joy in your role. Keep reconnecting to this and to why you do what you do.

WEEK 34
Time off

Over the last year I've reflected on my time off & attitude towards it, the conclusion is that I get ill/feel drained by the time I take a break, I then recover so I'm on top form to go back to work.

A familiar picture? Something has to change.

It seems illogical that we should feel so battered whilst on our time off, so many coaches and staff I work with describe the day before they return to work as the day they start to feel reenergised.

Therefore they have been unable to use their time off with energy and to enjoy fully. Are we using our time off to simply recover or can we go into a break already having the energy to enjoy it?

Week 31
Vulnerability
📍It is my journey & my lived experiences that shape who I am.

👐🏼Embracing vulnerability allows me to show up as the real me, a being human. This has been beneficial from a wellbeing and a performance perspective. Sentences such as “I don’t know” are my friend not foe, they speak to authenticity & collaboration in the relationships I have.

🎭Sport is a great provider of an environment where we see each other at our highest and lowest, where trust, human connection and unveiling our “masks” leads to great team performances and life long team mates. Use it well.

Applied learning series: WEEK 29

Being part of an MDT (multidisciplinary team)

➡️Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of multiple MDT’s Involving strength & conditioning coaches, physiotherapists, sport therapists, analysts, coaches, clinical psychologists. What serves us well as a psychologist is the ability to: ⏬

🤲🏼 Collaborate without an ego, support the conversations and relationships that other members of the MDT might be having with athletes.

🗣Communicate your role clearly, what you can bring to the team along with understanding what they want from you. How/when & what gets communicated in the team?

🆑 Role clarity, each member knowing their own and others roles, I used to spend a full day with each MDT member every season, specifically observing the ins & outs of their world.

👟Walk in their shoes and you’ll work more effectively with them for the shared purpose of brilliant athlete support.

Ethical foundations

“Sport has no time for ethics” was whispered in my ear early on in my career by someone who had been in sport for many years.

🚨Suffice to say alarm bells rang, ethics are the foundation upon which good practice as a sport psychologist is built.

🏠Shaky foundations leave any house at risk of collapse!

⚖️However there is no doubt there are certain challenges with working in sport, not least the challenge of multiple relationships within a system, for example; working with a coach and athlete from the same team, they are connected and therefore we must prepare for this.

WEEK 25 Applied Learnings Series

Communicate

🗣About 10 years ago the importance of this hit home as I was being harshly spoken to by a coach whom I had emailed from across the office “I’m right here just come and speak to me” were their words.

🌏I had come from a world in education where people didn’t have time for conversations and everything needed to be emailed or it didn’t exist! What I hadn’t done was consider my context and explore how communication best worked in my new setting.

🤲🏼Most importantly, who preferred what kind of communication from me, which as a sport psych priding herself on relationships and connection wasn’t my finest hour!

📝Here’s what I learnt:

WEEK 24 Applied Learnings Series
Loading Preferences

If you are like me then you may front load a lot in life, I will start my week, day and even my runs at an unsustainable pace and then towards the end wonder why I am lacking energy and motivation to do more or to keep going!

Working in professional sport lends its self to a fast paced and dynamic way of working but its important to realise what your own energy loading preferences are and how these play out for you in your daily life whether that’s in an office or on the pitch.

WEEK 23 applied learnings 🧵

Context context context

Behind every athlete is the story of who they are, their lived experiences.

Let’s take time to recognise & understand where somebody is coming from, actions and behaviours will make more sense.

Get to know their context/story.
Then we have a solid foundation for a relationship that could enhance performance.

Meet them where they are not where you are.

WEEK 22
Drains, radiators and me
Most of us will be familiar with the analogy of radiators being people who give every and drains being those you zap the life out our energy levels
We are told to surround ourselves with people who give us energy rather than take it from us

However, when was the last time you reflected on yourself in this context?

Working in sport can be exhausting & stressful at times, a perfect recipe for being drains rather than radiators especially when we are stressed

🔋🪫Be aware of when you are an energy giver & when you are an energy taker

Be responsible for this and the impact it has on others

Say hello to imposter syndrome👋🏼

I have had imposter syndrome with me for decades, I can even recall feeling it at school, as a PE teacher and now in my role as a sport psychologist.

I have been privileged to have worked with some incredible people both in and out of sport yet still every time I deliver, during most meetings, each time I accept a new role or opportunity the voice in my head pops in to say ‘hi, its imposter syndrome here, just checking in to question whether you’re good enough for this!’ 💭💭

If this sounds familiar, it’s ok and hugely common, check out my tips for how to manage it.
