Perry Psychotherapy

Perry Psychotherapy Art therapy for children & young people online and in person. I offer psychodynamic art therapy primarily to children & young people but also work with adults.

My role is to help people express thoughts and feelings they may not be aware they have (often known as unconscious thoughts). Often these unconscious thoughts affect our mood and behaviour in ways that we aren't even aware of, and which may not always make sense to us. Through creative activities and play, art therapy can gently help people to explore these deeper feelings, helping them process emotions, reduce anxiety, and gain a better sense of themself. Art therapy provides a safe and supportive space where they can express what's on their minds in a way that feels natural and comfortable. I am a fully qualified Art Psychotherapist registered member of BAAT (British Association of Art Therapists), HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) & ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office)

🎄 Digby Brown Christmas Calendar🎄

I was delighted to be invited by Digby Brown to help judge their Christmas Card Competition this year. Each entry came from talented artists across different Headway Groups who support adults living with brain injuries — a community that will always hold a special place in my heart after my seven years with Edinburgh Headway Group.

Art is a remarkable force. It strengthens cognitive pathways, supports rehabilitation, and creates room for expression when words fall short. It can spark memory, soothe overwhelm, open doors to self-understanding, and offer a sense of freedom that’s hard to capture in everyday life. Seeing that creativity shine through each submission was an absolute joy.

A big well done to everyone who entered — your artwork was powerful, thoughtful, and wonderfully full of personality.

✨ Russian Dolls & The Layers We Carry ✨

In the therapy room, Russian dolls become more than pretty wooden figures, they turn into a roadmap of the self.

Each layer represents a version of us:
🌟 The outer shell — the polished “I’m fine!” mask we show the world.
🌟 The middle layers — the feelings we kind of acknowledge… when the Wi-Fi’s down and we’re left alone with our thoughts.
🌟 The inner core — the tender, hidden truths we protect the most.

Carl Jung might call this exploration a dance with the shadow self—the parts we tuck away because they feel big, messy, or harder to manage. But here’s the good news: peeling back those layers isn’t about exposing weakness. It’s about discovering the whole, wonderfully complex human inside.

In art therapy, Russian dolls help map out these layers in a safe, imaginative, and hands-on way. It’s emotional due diligence with a creative twist.

Whether the outside looks brave, bubbly, quiet, unsure, or “totally chill,” there is always more beneath the surface—and that deeper self is worth meeting.

🎨 Ready to do some gentle, layer-by-layer exploration?
Let’s unpack the inner world, one doll at a time.

🧸 Art Therapy Through Play, Healing Without Pressure 🎨

For many children, talking about feelings can feel confusing or even scary. In art therapy, we use creativity and play to gently bridge that gap. Play is a child’s first language, in art therapy we use that language therapeutically to support emotional and psychological growth.

From a psychodynamic perspective, play and creative expression allow children to externalise inner experiences safely. Through imagery, role play, and creative materials, they communicate feelings that might otherwise remain hidden or misunderstood.

Through painting, building, drawing, and imaginative play, children express what words can’t. Psychodynamically, this allows the unconscious — thoughts, memories, emotions — to take form safely in symbolic ways. The art becomes a story the child can understand and reshape, with the therapist walking beside them.

This playful process helps children regulate emotions, build confidence, and find new ways to express themselves. Most importantly, it feels natural. They’re simply creating and exploring — and in doing so, they’re healing.

✨ 🧠 A proud moment today – being at the Head Injury Information Conference event not just as someone who attended for years in another capacity with Edinburgh Headway Group, but now with my own private practice. A full-circle day, and I couldn’t be prouder of how far I’ve come.

✨Good things are coming✨

Sometimes the path feels slow, sometimes it’s messy—but growth is happening quietly underneath it all. Trust the process, keep showing up, and let the good things find their way to you. 🌱💛

🌙 Night-time worries and nightmares can feel overwhelming for children – and sometimes trauma plays a big part in these restless nights.
Signs to look out for: frequent bad dreams, struggling to settle to sleep, fears at bedtime, or waking up distressed.

Art therapy offers a gentle, creative space for children to explore these feelings safely, giving shape to the fears that are hard to put into words. Through art, children can build coping tools, feel more secure, and regain a sense of calm at bedtime.
