Anyone heard of Elizabeth Melville? She was the first Scotswoman to see her work in print - in 1603. There is now a day and a programme of events in her honour…

Elizabeth Melville, Lady Culross was the first Scotswoman to see her work in print with the publication of her mini-epic 'Ane Godlie Dreame' in 1603. It quickly became a best-seller, right down to 1737.

The King's Wark is seen here as Rutherford's Bar and was one of the top watering holes for visiting sailors. Its amazing to think that a royal residence, a store-house and an armoury, as well as a tennis court stood on these grounds. It was begun by James I in 1434, but was not completed until about 1500!

The middle and the right buildings have now gone, replaced today with a pizza restaurant. Look at the drop from the riverside into the water, showing the depth of the river when it was still tidal. The platform of the swing bridge can be seen on the left have bottom corner - this allowed boats to come up river.
