Have you thought about your ecosystem? 🌍

It’s a word that might not have entered your mind since school, but an important one.

An ecosystem is the environment in which an organism lives in.

🌺The environment we choose to surround ourselves in can help us to thrive or wither.

Have a think about the following:

❤️Who do you surround yourself with? Do they support and light you up?

💼Do you love your work and find it rewarding?

🏡Does your home make you feel comfortable? Is it cluttered?

🌳Do you spend time in nature?

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒How is your relationship with your family?

💸Are finances a concern?

🏃‍♀️What do you do in your spare time?

🧘🏼‍♀️How do you relax and have fun?

All of these areas and more create an atmosphere which either positively or negatively impact your health.

🍽️Yes, the food on your plate is important, but there are also other elements we need to nourish us and help us to flourish.

If you feel you need support with this then reach out and I can share more about health coaching and how I may be able to help you 😊

Return of the stack…sorry, I couldn’t resist 🎶

It’s the return of my monthly newsletter.

I have been struggling a bit with how to show up online.

I enjoy interacting with everyone on here, but my main goal is to provide value and information so that you can make informed choices about your health.

These posts are great for the highlights, but sometimes I have more that I want to share.

So the monthly newsletter on (Sub)stack is back!

I will be writing about nutrition, all things health, wellness and personal development, with a pinch of my adventures in the great outdoors for good measure.

The link is in my instagram bio or visit https://upcycledhealth.substack.com to subscribe 😊

Let’s talk about your HEALTHSPAN....

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Life expectancy in Scotland is estimated to be 76.5 years for men and 80.7 years for women (National Statistics, 2020-2022).

👵👴The average lifespan has increased over the last 40 years.

🩺We are living longer, but how many of those years are spent with good health?

The National Records of Scotland for 2021-2023 state that our average healthy life expectancy, which is the number of years of life spent in good health, is 60 years for women and 59.6 years for men.

This figure has been decreasing since 2014.

What future do you want for yourself?

Personally, I want to be one of those people you hear about who are off on epic adventures when they are in their 80s🧗🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️🚵🏼‍♀️

I want to be active in my retirement.

Are you the same?

🤔And what life do you want to live now?

🙋🏼‍♀️My ultimate goal is to make the most of the time I have right now by improving my health both physically and mentally and to support you to do the same ❤️

I know in life there are no guarantees, but I want to give myself and others the best chance at having as long a healthspan as possible.

I love the statement:

‘Genetics loads the gun, but our environment pulls the trigger’.

🧬Yes, genetically we may be predisposed to certain conditions, but there are things we can do to support our health every day.

➡️We can make different choices.

➡️We can make small, sustainable, impactful changes.

➡️We can make a difference

Over the past few years I have done just that and I continue to do so.

📚I’ve educated myself and I’ve prioritised my health and I want to help you to do the same!

🤔Have you thought about your healthspan before?

❓️What small change could you make today?

Jumping on the flashback to 2016 trend…

* 10 years qualified as a pharmacist 👩‍⚕️ This was the year I decided to leave community pharmacy. I had qualified as an independent prescriber the year before and was excited to take on a new role working in mental health at a local hospital 🏥

* I was a member of The Moray Mountaineering Club and regularly joined them rock climbing at Cummingston and on weekend meets across Scotland.

* A highlight was a trip to Loch Ossian where I bagged 3 Munros in winter conditions taking my total to 10. This was just the beginning of my love for the mountains 🏔️

* The club helped me to make some great friendships and we organised a weekend wild camping at Sandwood Bay. And yes, we did carry in a volleyball net 😂 and I left with the worst sunburn on half of my face 🥵

* We also stayed at Inchnadamph and hiked up Canisp with beautiful views over to Suilven.

* This was also the year I bought my first mountain bike 🚵‍♀️

* I had always been a foodie and enjoyed cooking and devouring a cookbook of an evening looking for new ideas. This was the year I became interested in nutrition, inspired by deliciously Ella, The Food Medic and Madeleine Shaw.

* A year full of adventure and big changes with my career. Little did I know what the next 10 years had in store for me ✨

* It’s been so lovely reflecting on how life has changed and I feel excited to see what the next 10 years will bring!

* I look forward to seeing your flashback posts 📸

Some kind words from a recent client 🙌🏻

I truly love working with people and supporting them to make meaningful changes aligned with their individual goals.

🩻My approach focuses on looking at the body as a whole and how each system interconnects rather than functioning in isolation.

🕵️‍♀️A thorough health history helps with root cause investigation. What are the triggers? What’s driving symptoms?

🥦Food diary analysis allows us to uncover potential nutritional gaps and insufficiencies at both a macro and micro nutrient level.

📝This assists me in building a bespoke nutrition and lifestyle plan, which may include supplements to support each clients unique needs.

If you have been considering nutritional therapy or would like to know more about my services please book a discovery call via my website www.upcycledhealth.com or email upcycledhealth@gmail.com

First of all I want to wish a Happy New Year to you and wish everyone a happy and healthy 2026! 🥳

I have a few rituals which I like to complete at the start of a new year.

I’m not one for resolutions as such, but I do welcome the feeling of a fresh start and new beginnings.

First on my new year’s checklist is deciding on my word of the year.

This is not as simple as it sounds and it can actually take me quite some time to narrow it down.

Ask yourself the following:

• How do you want to feel this year?

• What do you want to welcome more of?

• What do you want to achieve?

• What do you want to say goodbye to?

• What word sums this up and motivates you?

For me, this year that word is FOCUS.

I want to be disciplined in my approach to work and the vision I have for Upcycled Health this year.

I want to stay committed to improving my fitness and training for my upcoming Hyrox event.

I want to say goodbye to concerning myself of what others may think or say, staying true to my beliefs and goals both in my personal and professional life.

I want to make time for the ones I love and show up for them as they do for me.

I want to remember why I started Upcycled Health and its importance in the current healthcare system.

Staying FOCUSED on all of the points above is how I would like to move forward this year.

I would love to know what your word of the year is!! Please share below 👇

🧄🥕🥬UPCYCLE YOUR DINNER....

🛠Upycling takes existing products and materials and gives them a new lease of life. And that’s what upcycled health aims to do - give you a new lease of life!

💥In this series we take meals that you may eat on a regular basis and give them a revamp by adding ingredients to them to increase their nutritional value.

❤️I love food and want to encourage others to focus on what we can add in to the diet to support our health and wellbeing.

Our diets don’t have to be restrictive and boring they can be full of amazing nutritious tasty food.

✨️Sometimes it just takes a bit of inspiration.

I’ve started with two dinner options: pasta and the classic roast dinner and provided some ideas to get you started.

Have a think about what you can add to your usual dinner to increase the nutritional value today! 🍅🍆🥕🌽🫑🥒🥬🧄

I look forward to hearing how you upcycle your dinner!

DAY 21: WINTER SOLSTICE REFLECTION ✨

The longest night of the year is the perfect time for reflection.

It also marks a turning point in the seasons sparking renewal and positivity for the year ahead.

If you can, take time today to slow down, pause and reflect.

🕯️ Light a candle, get cosy with a blanket, make a warming drink, find a notebook and pen and follow the journaling prompts above.

DAY 19: THINK OF FIVE THINGS YOU ARE GRATEFUL FOR 💖

This time of year can be overwhelming as we rush around trying to get organised for the big day.

Take a moment to pause.

Take a breath.

Think of 5 things that you are grateful for.

Remember to share with others if you are grateful for them. Make someone smile.

Pop a little positivity and perspective in your day 😊
