Over the last few years, more and more people have been trying to make sense of ADHD - often while stuck on long waiting lists and with very little support.

In this article, Jamie Gordon, Reading ADHD Group reflects on the ADHD 'boom', the role social media has played, and why psychoeducation programmes like InSight can be so powerful. Not as a quick fix, but as a way of helping people understand how their brain works and reduce self-blame.

If you’re looking for thoughtful, grounded perspectives rather than noise, this is well worth a read.

Loneliness, rejection sensitivity and moments of ego-centrism can appear in ADHD - not as flaws, but as emotional responses to years of mismatch or misunderstanding.
Naming these patterns helps people relate to themselves with more perspective and less criticism.

What part of emotional experience are you learning to approach more gently?

What shapes how ADHD shows up?
ADHD is influenced by biology, environment and psychosocial factors.
This is why two people with the same diagnosis can look completely different day to day.
You may recognise how certain surroundings or pressures intensify traits without meaning to.

The InSight programme explores this in depth. If you're curious, you can book a call through our page https://nddirected.org/book-chat/

The social box.
Most people sit comfortably inside an unspoken margin of socially expected behaviour. ADHD often nudges people outside that space.
This is where misunderstandings and labels begin.
Many people tell us they spent years feeling “out of sync” long before they had a name for it.
We'd love you to share this post with someone who might find it clarifying.

Executive function and emotional reactions

When emotional control, inhibition or flexibility are stretched, emotions tend to appear faster and more intensely.

This isn’t a personal flaw. It’s how the brain is trying to cope with limited bandwidth.

People often say learning this brings huge relief - the moment when behaviour finally makes sense.
Which part of executive function do you most recognise in yourself?

Why do ADHD and emotions often travel together?

Emotional regulation challenges are common in ADHD, and they have nothing to do with effort or character. They sit where biology, lived experience and executive function meet.

Many people describe it as feeling everything “all at once” or “before they can name it”.

If that sounds familiar, you’re in good company here.

If you’d like to understand this part of ADHD more clearly, you can read more about InSight here https://thinkadhd.co.uk/psychoeducation/

Huge congratulations to Jamie Gordon at Reading ADHD Group for delivering his first full InSight ADHD programme.

Jamie is a fierce and active advocate for ADHD support and education in his community at the ground level.

His passion comes naturally and his understanding and ability to convey the complexity of ADHD and executive function are exactly the reason we approached him to become an InSight facilitator. We focus our work with those who actively contribute to their communities. Who spend their time doing what they can for one reason. They care.

It’s about time those golden individuals started to get rewarded for their compassion and drive. That’s exactly what we are trying to do with InSight - support those on the frontline, to deliver practical and honest information about ADHD.

It’s no small thing to take a brand new psycho-education course, make it your own and guide a group through it with confidence. Jamie has put in the preparation, the hard work, and the care to make sure participants felt supported and understood throughout - and the feedback speaks for itself.

A brilliant milestone for him, and a great step forward for expanding InSight across our regions.

Well done, Jamie. We look forward to seeing what comes next for you.

Executive function shapes how we plan, prioritise, and follow through.
Many people with ADHD find prioritisation particularly difficult. Our InSight facilitators explain simple ways to manage competing priorities and build systems that actually stick.

Medication isn't suitable or accessible for everyone, but understanding can create long lasting change.

InSight isn’t a quick fix. It’s a psychoeducation course designed to help people understand why ADHD feels the way it does, and how to work with it, not against it.

We like to share nuggets of wisdom and recently we saw a visual explaining how psychoeducation works, obviously we wanted to relate it to InSight: 'Medication is the armbands, InSight is the swimming lessons.' Without the lessons, you might find yourself swimming in circles.

Discover how compassionate learning can reshape confidence and self-management.

Welcome to the official page for InSight!

What is InSight?
InSight is an 8‑week psychoeducation programme that helps adults understand how their ADHD brain works, build practical strategies, and create a life that fits. But more than that, this is a space to connect, share, and learn together.

In this space you’ll find:
• Stories from people navigating ADHD every day
• Tips and tools you can use right now
• Support and conversation with a community that gets it

Follow us, join the discussion, and be part of a community where understanding ADHD opens doors instead of closing them.
