Early this month our defibrillator went missing … but it’s back now. And the good news is that it was used for a genuine emergency. It was there when someone needed it. Did you know that defibrillators are used in less than 1 in 20 cardiac arrests? It’s a time when every minute can count. Chances of survival reduce by 10% with every minute that passes without medical help.
We learned a lot while we tracked down what had happened to it, and thanks to everyone who helped along the way. Sometimes defibrillators go on long journeys, depending on where the ambulance takes the patient. But in this case it was with the South West Ambulance Service who returned it to The Star fully checked and back in working order. And while we worried that it might have been taken with malicious intent we were reassured that it can never be activated on a living person because it will detect any heartbeat.
Julia.

We’re very sad to report that the community public access defib based at fowler_fp on Magdalen Road, Exeter, appears to have been stolen.

It’s so frustrating as there is no re-sale market for defibrillators and it’s highly unlikely someone would steal it for their own personal benefit (you just have to ask if you did need one)! 🤷🏻

We will always make sure that stolen defibs are replaced, but it’s disappointing that a defib that could have been used in another location is now being used as a replacement. We will also now need to change the cabinet to a locked version. Locked cabinets are slower to access in emergencies and can sometimes be the difference between life and death. 😢

Please do get in touch if you can help or have any information.

A survey carried out by Censuswide on behalf of the British Heart Foundation suggests 43% of adults in the UK have never learnt CPR. That's up to 23 million people! Furthermore, of those who hadn’t learnt CPR, 58% said that no-one in their household had learnt CPR either, leaving entire families and households vulnerable.

Research from the University of Warwick's OHCAO Epidemiology Report shows a staggering 80% of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur within the home, followed by 12.7% occurring in a public space. This underscores the critical need for adults in the UK to learn proper CPR technique.

You can learn CPR from the comfort of your home in just 15 minutes. Grab a cuppa and a cushion to practise on, and check out The British Heart Foundation's interactive CPR training course: https://www.bhf.org.uk/how-you-can-help/how-to-save-a-life/how-to-do-cpr/learn-cpr-in-15-minutes

Alternatively, head over to the Resuscitation Council UK's Lifesaver learning to
immerse yourself in realistic cardiac arrest scenarios, where you’ll learn lifesaving CPR skills: https://www.lifesaver.org.uk/
